Emir Mohammed: New Development

The life of this bright and talented young Trinidadian, living in Canada, and former active poster on the alt.education.distance news group, until his involvement with the nonwonderful Robert Kennedy University in Switzerland became known, has been a topic of interest to some. Recently it was reported that he was now listed as "Professor Emir Mohammed" on the faculty of Greenwich University (Norfolk Island).

Even more recently (like today), he has been removed from the Greenwich faculty list.

I have Emailed Emir, inviting him to participate in this forum, and I hope he will.

I would find Emir's participation interesting and I also hope he will contribute to this forum. I think he might be able to provide a very interesting perspective.

I looked through his old angelfire web site and I notice that he's taken down any references to the less than wonderful institution that he apparently taught at for a while.

Can anyone tell me if a degree from Greenwich University is transferable to any U.S. regional accredited school?

On its web site, Greenwich never mention its accreditation. I don't know if it is accredited by any recognization body.

There is another thread about Greenwich that you may wish to read. Greenwich seemed to claim the same accreditation as Australian schools, but in fact they have none. It is doubtful that many, or even _any_, credits will transfer to a regionally accredited school.

You are correct that Greenwich has many of the same standards for admission, curriculum, etc. as RA schools in the US. The Master of Science in mathematics looks quite solid...until you see the Mathematics Special Projects class, for which the student may submit a work of performance art. I cannot think of another mathematics graduate school that would find this acceptable and I can't personally justify such an undertaking as part of a serious math program.

stated on this thread that Greenwich Univ degree programs sound so attractive.

I just could not imagine that so many non-accredited schools market themselves so well. I am sure there are many victims that are not aware of the value, legitimacy, and validation of a degree.

Yes, this organization sends out something like 4 millions spams per month. It is an out-and-out diploma mill, and admits this freely while talking to prospective customers.

They have changed names about a half dozen times. Their degrees are, of course, worthless.

 

Greenwich's message to Emil Knutti concludes with this statement:

I think that issue is more important than whatever Mr. Mohammed is or isn't doing.

Apparently Greenwich is continuing on with their assertion that their act of the Norfolk Island legislature constitutes *accreditation*. Despite the findings of the AQF evaluation.

In my opinion the Norfolk Island act closely resembles *state approval* in the United States, if that approval is received from a state that execises little or no higher education oversight. But it appears to have little in common with what an American understands by the word 'accreditation'. In particular, no quality assurance is implied at all.

Use of the word can only be misleading, and in my opinion that is probably the intention.

 

I don't believe it has been posted that Emir is listed on the faculty of the Canadian School of Management. I found it today.

 

Rich points out that Emir Mohammed is on the faculty at Canadian School of Management. And, as of this very Friday morning, the 4th of May, 2001, he is also on the faculty of the really dreadful Robert Kennedy University, whose website states that "Professor Mohammed is also recognized world-wide as an expert on distance education."

Oh, really. With hundreds of thousands of academics out there who do not have highly questionable associations, why would CSM need to take the risk of public ridicule, by doing this? And what, also, is said about DETC's review of the faculty of schools before granting their accreditation (as they have done with CSM)?

 

Good for you, John, for continuing to reach out to Emir, whom I remember from when I visited AED. It's important to reach out to as many thoughtful voices as possible in this realm of distance learning and non-traditional higher education.

 

And reading his latest post, it does indeed appear Dr. Bear would sincerely like to reach out and touch someone.
