Passing on a request from a undergrad I'm somehow become the mentor for. Anyone know of any online RA History masters programs? I could not find any - other than Harvard's - probably because there isn't much you can do with it.
Have you looked at CSUDH HUX program? One of the options is in History, whihc my wife is currently enrolled in.
For a whole bunch of options in history and related subjects, see this thread. One update is that American Military University is now a candidate with the North Central Association/Higher Learning Commission.
Sheffield Hallam History MA www.BAin4weeks.com lists the MA in Imperialism and Culture at Sheffield Hallam Uni in the UK, coming in at under $4K. It's under the university's history dept: http://www.shu.ac.uk/schools/cs/history/mastr.htm and worth a look generally is the ever popular.... http://bain4weeks.com/mastermenu.html Matt
Here's two others: MA in Modern History at Macquarie University MA in Archeology and Heritage University of Leicester Good luck to all, Jack
I've just realized that both of the degree programs I referenced were "GAAP" and not "RA." I suppose that when one is in the desert, one doesn't question too severely the origin of the water. Jack
Fort Hayes State University, although not a MA in History it is a Master's of Liberal studies w/ a concentration in History, 18 hrs. enough to meet the requirements to teach in jr. college environments...the whole program is 31 hrs. and about 450 bucks for a three hr. class. Best, Gavin
Re: Sheffield Hallam History MA Hmmm...not RA, but one can't argue with the price...how is Sheffield Hallam regarded...if anyone REALLY knows? Often, British schools have a cachet in the US - deserved or not
DL Master's in History Angela or Ian would be the best sources. I believe that Sheffield Hallam is a former polytechnic that achieved university status in 1992. Not to be confused with the older and esteemed University of Sheffield. Angela had links to the tables which can be helpful. I do know it's not at the bottom of any of the tables I've seen, that honor seems to be permanently held by Thames Valley University.
SHU is indeed an ex-poly. It's usually regarded as one of the better of the breed, and sits somewhere in the 60s in the overall league tables. Yes, there is still some stigma attached to the "ex-poly" label, but SHU is definitely not an institution that I would avoid. League tables of various kinds can be found at: http://www.timesonline.co.uk/section/0,,716,00.html (Times Good University Guide, currently doing a day by day listing of their new subject tables for 2005). http://screenprintlive.telegraph.co.uk/Default/Scripting/ArticleWin.asp?From=Archive&Source=Page&Skin=alevelsup&BaseHref=alevel/2004/04/17&EntityId=Pc00103&ViewMode=HTML&GZ=T (Telegraph overall tables) http://education.guardian.co.uk/universityguide2003/0,13330,956807,00.html (Guardian tables, which stress teaching quality) http://www.hero.ac.uk/rae/rae_dynamic.cfm?myURL=http://195.194.167.103/Results/byuoa.asp (RAE 2001 by unit of assessment) All in all, the league tables say pretty much what I would about SHU. A middling good ex-poly with a history department that seems to be very good, and is sensibly concentrating on its core strengths in modern and post-colonial studies. Other than SHU, Leicester, Lampeter and the OU, the range of online history programmes at the postgrad level in the UK is pretty minimal. Dundee has two interesting courses starting this autumn http://www.dundee.ac.uk/archives/armdl.htm and http://www.dundee.ac.uk/history/distance.htm but not of the big players in the subject have gone any further than part-time courses. Angela
This is true. Sam Houston's program is a Master of Arts in History with an Emphasis in Military History and is available completely online with a Thesis/No Thesis option. Each course is about $700. http://www.shsu.edu/~dl_www/mahist.html
