Well so far I hav spent 21 months (have 1 class to go) and spent around $16k. I anticapate at least 2 more years and around another $7k. This includes books, tuition, travel, software, computers, etc (all out of pocket).

Five years pretty much full time for the PhD. All told, about $18K in fees for the first three years (full-time, residential -- 5000 quid the first year, less than 2.5 for the other two: I had an Overseas Research Studentship. I finished in '97); the last two were free. Teaching covered room and board.

Union Institute in the mid to late 90s... took just a smidge under 4 years and the cost at the time was around 12-14K/yr. Worth every penny and then some.

I took a leave of absence in the middle, but it was about 5 1/2 years of part-time coursework and about 1 1/2 years of dissertation. Total tuition cost has been around 18-20K.

I needed 6+ years, full time. But it didn't cost me anything financially (plenty of cost in other ways!).
