What are the repercussions of failing clep exams?

For example: If I fail the math clep 2 times and pass it on the 3rd try, will this affect GPA or the acceptance of the credits? Thanks for your info.

    Nothing, really.

When you take the test, you're given the option of having your score sent directly the school(s) of your choice, or just sent to you. Have them sent just to you, and if you pass, you can then send them to your school(s). If you fail, just wait the minimum time (6 months I think) and retake the test.

To my knowledge, the schools only include test scores for which they give credit.

I believe one doesn't "fail" a CLEP test. One might not score high enough to get credit, but no failure is implied or indicated.

So there is no reason (besides cost) not to try some exams cold. Great!! Thanks for the info!

Remember once you fail to pass, you can not retake the test for 6 months. As Lawrie points out the best method is to take the pretest to see if you are likely to pass. If not then it is better to sttudy before taking it even if it is a first attempt.

Okay... I'm new to the whole CLEP thing, and I need some clarification:

You can just go and take the tests - collect results, and then submit them later to the school of your choice? I thought that you had to actually be enrolled somewhere, and then have the results sent directly to the school.

Since I'm not entirely sure when and where I'll finish up, this is important information! :)

I wouldn't go at them cold. I took to CLEP tests in history last year and I passed with just a bare minimum (according to what my school required). The school I took it at gave me a brochure with acceptable passing scores but it is up to your school to determine what their passing score is.

I rented approximately 20 history video tapes and watched them for two weeks straight thinking that would be all that I needed. It helped, but alot of historical facts were not covered on the tapes. That's why it's important to review with other materials as well.

Tapes may not work if you're studying for math or chemistry.

    Exactly.

I wasn't enrolled anywhere when I took my first CLEP exams, I just had the scores sent to my school later.

    Paying for transcript of CLEP

When you are taking the CELP on computer it is free to send the results to the college. If you have them sent later there is a $20 charge to send them. It would be all the test you have take for $20 but if you add a test and want a new copy sent, it will be another $20.

SO, if you have the score sent directly to the college of choice, then it's free... otherwise you have to pay.

But you get a copy of the score to take with you, right?

So basically, you'd have an "unofficial" copy to submit if necessary?

    Not exactly.

When you take the test, you have the option of where you want your results sent. If you want them sent only to you, then you'll get a scorecard in about 2-4 weeks.

If you decide later that you want to forward your score to a school, then you can do that. As mentioned, this will cost you $20 or so.

Anyway...you can take the test and then decide if you want your results to be official.

    Unofficial

It is unofficial though, so an official evaluation, from say COSC, will have to have an official copy. I just went through this with them.

CLEP is fast about getting the info to the college but make sure they have your Social on each test. One of mine was just under my name and it took them a while to find it.

I'm not enrolled anywhere right now and am taking CLEP and DSST exams to fulfill the requirements I know I'll need for my degree. (Easily found by getting a copy of your school of choice's catalog and checking Gen. Ed. and major requirements.)

CLEP keeps test scores on record for 20 years. I'm not sure of the exact time frame for DANTES, but it's probably about the same. So you have 20 years to take the exams before you enroll somewhere.

If you have the score sent directly to the college of your choice, you are correct that it does not cost anything. (I'm already an applicant and in the process of enrollment, so I am having my scores sent directly to my school to try to avoid the $20 fee. I still may need to pay it, but I'm hoping that since I am an applicant and in the process of enrolling, they'll keep a hold of the scores I'm having sent when I take each exam.)

Bruce and Deb covered the rest. :)

There is no organization called "CLEP," and DANTES doesn't run the DSST program. Both testing programs, CLEP and DSST, are operated by the Educational Testing Service, IIRC.

CLEP was miswording - I probably should have written College Board (http://www.collegeboard.com/about/index.html) to put it in the right context. DANTES and DSST are two that I have seen frequently linked. (A link on the Educational Testing Service website you mentioned could further that - http://www.ets.org/tests/dtest.html; I also did a Google search using the phrase "DANTES DSST" and many colleges link DANTES and DSST as interchangable terms, but on quick review I saw no sources stating they were separate.)

In reading the sources I had found on both testing services, I had never seen mention to the Educational Testing Service, IIRC or its role over both CLEP and DSST exams. After your mention, however, I looked specifically for it and stand corrected regarding Educational Testing Service, IIRC. http://www.ets.org/ Thank you for the correction.
