Do you know of an RA school that's not in the DegreeFinder database?

It was pointed out on another thread that there are apparently at least a handful of regionally accredited distance learning programs that are not currently in our database.

A couple of the missing schools are by DegreeInfo editorial decision, but there are probably a number of schools that, for whatever reason, we haven't learned about.

If you know of a regionally accredited or non-US school that meets GAAP criteria that should be added, please post as much info as possible to this thread. We'll review it for inclusion.

And please, no flames about RA vs DETC. Excluding DETC schools was also an editorial decision we've made (and reconsidered at various points), and while we're willing to consider individual DETC schools on a case-by-case basis, none (that I can think of offhand) have ever written to us to request consideration.

Maybe I'm missing it but I don't see a listing of the schools in the database. Without that it is difficult to know what might be added.

    Editorial Decision

    Chip,

Geteducated.com lists more schools than you have in your database. Since you stated that you will be making an editorial decision I would recommend you bounce your list with theirs. They do not exclude any accredited school but do identify the type of accreditation.

    Ike,

Thanks. Was that a link I should have seen?

    Why not Phoenix?

    Chip,

Here are a few RA schools that are not on your database, as of the time of my post:

I understand it is your list and that you put whomever you want in it. I also understand you do not like the University of Phoenix. However, as you are probably well aware:
    • UoP has been an innovator in adult education and distance education since the mid 1970's
    • UoP is regionally accredited, and in good standing with NCA
    • UoP is one of the largest universities in the US, with over 200,000 students… they must be doing something right, don’t you think?
    • UoP is seeking accreditation with ACBSP
Are any other prominent DL institutions seeking that level of accreditation? (AACSB, etc.) This is not a rhetoric question, I like to know.

I think you are making a mistake by excluding UoP from your list. Almost as if someone leaves Ford out of an automobile manufacturers list because of the problems with the Pinto and they don’t like the Focus. I don’t think Phoenix needs DegreeInfo to be successful, but perhaps it could be a valuable partner to your organization… just like DeVry, AIU and other for-profit schools listed under your “Featured Schools.”

Here's my personal opinion on UoP and DegreeInfo. Even if UoP were the worst choice possible for an RA degree because of price and student services (note: I'm not saying that it is, just let me finish), DegreeInfo should still list UoP in it's finder and even accept advertising from UoP if they wanted to pay. UoP is not only accredited it is RA. A clear separation between forum opinions/postings/moderation and advertising is a must, but I think that it is perfectly ethical and honest to have some separation between personal opinion and business decisions. IMHO, RA or DETC means accredited and should all be considered potential ethical advertising partners. After all in a business environment for experienced applicants, the utility of the degrees based on the school becomes blurred for the accredited degrees. UoP might be the best choice for some people even IF it were a bad choice for most people. Some individual responsibility for personal decisions is a good thing.

No, it is not actually easy to locate. To view the listed schools, you have to scroll down to the bottom of the homepage (www.degreeinfo.com) and then select Sitemap. Once you are on a new web page, you should scroll down again to the bottom of the page and click on A-D School Name or E-H School Name, etc. If you want to see all the listed schools, you should remove /details/A-D.html from the URL and press Enter key.

I don't count on this forum for my decision, I use the accrediting body to qualify the school since that's where complaints are registered that make a difference. I do count on this forum for options and new programs that may be of interest.

    OK, using Ike's list:

    Academy of Art University

Wow, thanks for all of the input. Nathan and I (well, mostly Nathan) have been responsible for keeping up the database, and we'll try and start looking at these schools and get them added (the RA ones, anyway.)

And I do hear the criticism about our editorial decision on exclusion of UoP and DETC or non-RA schools. The former may be something that we revisit again soon; the latter is probably not going to see any wholesale change, though, as I've said elsewhere, any DETC school is free to apply to us for individual consideration; none has yet done so.

BTW, it's not an arbitrary, personal decision on any of these matters. While this is a private forum and website, and we do reserve the right to make editorial decisions as we see fit, we also listen carefully to the comments of our users and try our best to serve the needs of the community.

One other thing: We don't necessarily believe that it's our role to "protect" people by not advertising schools that we aren't comfortable with; it's more a philosophical issue of supporting the institutions that we believe offer good programs and treat people fairly, and choosing not to support schools that have a poor reputation, either in customer/student service, academic quality, or ethical and truthful marketing.

    EMU

Eastern Michigan University offers a few programs via distance learning.

Master of Science in Engineering Management

Master of Science in Human Nutrition (CPD)

Master of Arts in Educational Media and Technology

    Master of Science in Quality

Graduate Certificate in Educational Media and Technology

    Graduate Certificate in Legal Administration

Bachelor of Science in Dietetics (CPD)

I have been accepted into the MS in Engineering Management program. I start this fall. I will let you know how it works out. I must say that after speaking to the head of the MS in EM program, I am impressed.

Of course, EMU is regionally accredited and most programs have some sort of professional accreditation.
