TESC and FEMA ... no longer accepted?

I submitted my certificate for a FEMA course to TESC, and I got a letter back saying "sorry, but this isn't approved by ACE, and so you aren't getting the credit".

I suppose I could have FEMA issue the credits via that community college they've partnered with, and then submit the credit that way.

This was for the "basic disaster recovery for civilians" course (or something along those lines).

    Anyone have any ideas?

I remember reading that the community college will transcript those FEMA tests for a fee ($30?). Probably read that on the webpage were they talk about taking the FEMA tests... Or maybe it was on this board?
I also remember it is mentioned on the webpage for that particular community college.

TESC Catalog- Pg 20 - Federal Emergency Management Agency

Hello, Check the undergrad prospectus page 20 printable version.*** You are probably on a time line for graduation. I would call the registrar tomorrow. The catalog states 1-25. I recently had 22 credits from FEMA transcripted for credit. (1 month ago). This is still a viable option. Hille**

With 60 credits left before I graduate, if there is one thing I have a surplus of, its extra time. :)

I will call them and find out what the deal is, I guess.

Here is the link for Frederick Community College that will transcript the EMI certificates. OOOPS, the cost looks like $60, but that might not be relevant...

    Good luck.

i need the answer to this question as well. i completed 25 credits with FEMA in the last few weeks. COSC said they will not accept them unless they are transcribed by F.C.C. first. not sure the reasoning for this? i was hoping to go for the COSC BS but, i am considering TESC now. i thought that TESC took these as is. i completed the IS courses. any ideas? need to make a move and i really can't afford to pay for the $1500.00 it would cost me to transcribe them at F.C.C

    Credit Banking

Good Morning, I would credit bank FEMA credits at TESC and have the transcript transferred. This would cost 350. Hille

For only a few FEMA courses, credit banking them is probably not the most cost effective route.

    This from FEMA:
"It is possible to earn academic credit for completion of these courses. Here's how:Starting in February 1999, Frederick Community College (FCC) assumed responsibility for the evaluation of our independent study courses. Those courses meeting academic standards become eligible for one semester hour of lower division academic credit. After successfully completing a course, students filing an application and submitting the current fee of $60.00 per course will receive a personal copy of their FCC transcript, and additional copies may be directed to other institutions free of charge.Download an Adobe PDF copy of the IS college credit application. Download Adobe Acrobat Reader. The completed application may be mailed or faxed; details are on the form. Be sure to print AND submit both pages of the college credit application."

$60 per credit isn't that high and you would need just about 6 courses for the credit bank route to be cost effective. Then, is the transcript from the credit bank more valuable than the one from Frederick....

I've though about these == I have 16 hours of them already dating back to the 80's. But can't see how they might apply to a degree program that I'm interested in.

    :)

Am I missing the obvious here? I go to the FEMA site:

    http://training.fema.gov/emiweb/IS/cc.asp

And they tell me to download a copy of the "IS (Independent Study) College Credit Application", and I'm supposed to fill it out and FAX it to Frederick Community College.

The thing is, I don't see such a form on their site. There is a "transcript request" form, but not sure if that is it or not. Any ideas?

Also, in reference to my first post in the thread this is a copy/paste from my online degree audit from TESC regarding the FEMA course I submitted for credit:

I recieved quite a few credits from TESC last year for FEMA classes sent directly from FEMA not credit banked. including:
IS-513 The Professional in Emergency Management,
    IS-394 Mitigation for Homeowners
IS-346 An Orientation to Hazardous Materials for Medical Personel,
    IS-301 Radiological Emergency Response,

I completed more than that but thoes are the ones that I recieved credit for.

The one I took was "IS-7: A Citizen's Guide to Disaster Assistance".

I saw an old post on the tesc.edu boards where someone mentioned that they took that course, which is why I chose it. I will probably just go the Frederick CC route, assuming I can figure out what form it is I'm supposed to fill out lol.

For those following this thread, I wrote an email to the folks that maintain the FEMA/IS site, and they told me the form for transferring the credit to Frederick CC had accidentally been removed, and has been re-added. Here is a quick link:

I took it heart and sent in the $60 for each course I finished with FEMA to Frederick CC. They are just up the road from me any way so why not have them on the books to transfer the credits into TESC.

TESC took in all them since I went the Frederick CC route. I ended up with only 9 credits short for my AAS.

Are all of the FEMA classes in the "Elective" category?

Would most college that accept transfer credits, accept these credits once they are transcribed by FCC?

You may want to look into Excelsior College....they accept FEMA credits, in fact they encourage some undergrads to take FEMA credits if they fall short in an area.

If I find the link....I'll post it, I do some hunting here

    Thanks. This is good news.
I did a search of the EC website with no resulits for FEMA. If you can find the link or any other info, I would apprecaite it. This would be a lot cheaper than paying $60 a credit.

I called EC and was told that many of the FEMA classes are in the ACE guide. Therefore there is no reason to pay $60 per credit to FCC. The EC advisor told me they charge $250 for their banking credit.

It is listed in the ACE Guide under NATIONAL EMERGENCY TRAINING CENTER.
