I would like to take some classes at home to learn excel, access Microsoft Office programs to help me get a better job.

Any suggestion? I took a Medical Transcription class at home about 10 year ago that was a real rip off and very worried about doing this again.

    Thank

If your state has a technical school or technical college system that offers online courses that may be an excellent place to start.

If you live in GA you might strongly wish to consider www.gvtc.org.

    Hi,

    Thanks for all your replies.

Let me explain more of my situation.

There are no colleges around me due to where I live which in the middle is nothing but hogs and cornfields.

I called the college in state and all want me to take the SAT and ACT and find all my high school records for over 20 years ago to see what computer classes I have taken. They don’t get that we didn’t have computer in high school back then. You were luck if in typing class you got an electric typewriter instead of a manual one.

I do know computers and own a web page (http://www.MomsBreak.com) and now how to write html freehand and do graphic design. My web page makes a nice profit but not enough so I need a part time job out of the house. ~ BUT ~ there are no jobs around here for my graphic design or web page skills. God forbid anyone out here join they computer age. Some evil sprit might come out of that evil Internet and get them. Or the might get addicted because “That there Internet is like a drug. Have you seen those kids sit for hours on these things!” As these people sit watching their Jerry Springer – Sorry, I had to vent a bit.

Anyways, I do not want a degree. I know word and kind of know excel and want to learn Access. More than anything I just need a piece of paper so when the new huge hospital opens out here I can go put in a resume that include that all important piece of paper that says I know how to run the software. I bought some interactive CD’s on word called Professor teacher which are ok but I need an actually classes I can take without going for a full degree. I want quick “do it yourself” classes I can sit down and work my way through them as fast as I can. I have a son starting college this fall and really need some money.

That where I am at and what I am trying to find
    Thanks
    Kimberly

    Kimberly,

For regular college courses that Excelsior College link should do. But if the hogs don't mind and the corn don't care about a college degree then you might find what you need here under Computer Applications.

    Hope that helps.

Thank you for the link. I have been search online for days and not finding anything but full degrees.

And I just won't tell the hogs or corn :D

If all you want is a working knowledge of the subject (no plans to try to transfer credit later), then it probably won't get much cheaper than CALCampus. The Access course is only $125 and is totally DL.

Thanks, I will check it out. I have no interest in transfering credits. I only want a piece of paper I can take to a job and say I have taken this class and completed it. I am at the age I need a desk job because I can on longer do Laser Engraving and pressing shirts like I use to.

A place to start is Ed-X: Online Education Clearinghouse whihc has links to many courses and programs on many different topics.

    Under Computer Science some include:

    ...
    Cobol • CICS • DB2 • Fortran • Assembly • Pascal • Others
    • Computer Forensics
    Computer Information Systems
    • Creating Reports
    • Database Software
    • Database Systems
    • E-Commerce • Web Business • Security
    • Financial Software
    ...

For example - Under Database Software

    Are:
    - Access 2000 (Private Lessons Channel (Colorado, USA))
    • ITSW 1055 - Access Intermediate (Austin Community College (Texas, USA))
    • ITSW 1053 - Access Introduction (Austin Community College (Texas, USA))
CIS 113 - Advanced Access Applications (Strayer University – Online (Washington, D.C., USA))
    • COMP 3010 - Advanced Database Application (Northwestern State University Online (Louisiana, USA))
    • CS135AC - Advanced Micro Database Software - Access (Chemeketa Community College (Oregon, USA))
    • CSCI C125 - Advanced MS Access (Cerro Coso Community College Online (California, USA))
    ....

    and others

Community colleges in your own local (state) will probably be the lowest cost. Scaling up to private companies.

    Kimberley,

I just want to say I fully enjoyed reading this post. It was hilarious. I happen to feel the same way about the hogs and the cornfields!!! So funny......When we moved to this very small area we currently live in I told my husband I felt we had been airdropped into a cornfield. I understand how hard it is to feel like everything is trapped in a time warp except you!

I applaud you for thinking ahead to putting something on a resume for when the hospital opens. Sounds like you will be in an excellent position to get a job like that. I want to tell you that since you do want something to put on a resume it might not be a bad idea for you to get a "certificate" in something computer related. You can do that relatively quickly through Rio Salado College. My husband has been working through them for awhile. It is very easy to do from home. They send him the programs that he needs. They have a program where you can start out earning the certificate and then if you keep going you get the associate and then if you keep going you get the bachelor's. I think it would be something you might look into.

Anyway, good luck and really keep in touch. I enjoyed reading your post on here and will check out your website.
