I am in search of a doctoral program in Sociology or Psychology with a concentration in Gerontology. The program also needs to accredited or equivalent, affordable, and contain a nonresidency requirement. I would appreciate your feedback and guidance. Thank you.

The subject index to Bears' Guide 14th ed. is pretty thorough, and does not show any doctoral programs specifically in gerontology, although it could well be a possible focus in the programs in sociology at South Bank U, U of Kent at Canterbury, U of Luton, U of Melbourne, and U of South Africa.

Two other ideas that might work: the Ph.D. programs in developmental psychology offered by Edith Cowan University and Macquarie University.

And, of course, The Union Institute, the "Type O, Universal Donor" of schools.

Take a look at The Fielding Institute (I'm a Fielding grad). I knew fellow students who specialized in gerontology.

Fielding offers Ph.D. in both Psychology (APA accredited) and Sociology (see Fielding's HOD program). Both routes are workable, depending on what you were looking to do once you finished.

The program does require some residency, but it's managable. Personally, I'd question any Ph.D. level program that did not have a residency component. It's an extremely important element of "becoming" an expert.

As well, it does cost some money. However, institutional solvency is also important.

Try Capella university (http://www.capellauniversity.edu) for their developmental psych program with courses in gerontological psych.

    Hello, there!

In point of actuality, there are some doctoral programs specifically in Gerontology. One of those is that of Curtin Unversity of Technology in Australia.

I think there are others, too, but I haven't checked exhaustively. Blackwolf, if you want to discuss about these issues, please E-mail me.

    Best wishes,

Marvelous! I was not aware of this program -- BlackWolf, if you have the option, look into this one. The URL to the school is www.curtin.edu.au. They are very friendly to serious students who want to pursue an external research doctorate; I looked into their Ph.D. program in Internet studies last year and liked what I saw.

The one drawback is that you do have to have a master's to be eligible for a Curtin doctorate, usually with at least a 15,000 word thesis (but it may be possible to have this waived, given the field).

    Good luck!

Virgina-Commonwealth has an accredited, reputable distance learning program for a PhD in Gerontology. It's probably one of the best in the country.

    Hope that helps,
    Sue
