I sure do feel for the guy but he's going to have to change that creative writing major to something else if he plans to someday support himself in a real way.
What happened to the starving artists? The Poes, the Whitmans? Is it all dollars and cents, and the bottom line? Heck, maybe he'll be as fortunate as an author who wrote about a boy wizard and went from welfare to billionaire (that rhymes by the way ), some put passion ahead of profession, we should all be so lucky.
