I'm very surprised that the margin was as narrow as has been revealed.

The comparison they offered the HR managers was:
    • University of Southern California vs. University of Phoenix
    and
    • University of Michigan vs. University of Phoenix.
Two "name brand" traditional schools versus University of Phoenix.

And yet the University of Phoenix was favored over the name brand schools in 22% of the responses!

Well, as a loather of UofM football (and much else), I certainly would have picked Phoenix. Hau!

Seriously, I wonder what results they would have achieved had the choices been University of Arizona or Arizona State versus University of Phoenix.

What is it? I mean, besides accredited and expensive and ubiquitous.

    <<FINAL RESULTS FOR BOTH QUESTIONS
Traditional Universities (i.e., USC and University of Michigan) - 50%
    University of Phoenix - 22%
    Split Opinions (either) - 13.8%
    Makes No Difference - 13.8%>>

It's been a long day, so I may be reading this wrong. But doesn't this really say that right at 50% of the respondents either preferred Univ of Phoenix or saw it pretty much equivalent to the B&M schools?

OK, as an Arizona resident and University of Arizona graduate (and former UofP instructor), let me answer that:

For years UA and ASU offered classes and programs whenever suited their professors. Like it or lump it. The University of Phoenix brought CHOICE to students first in Arizona and then the rest of the country. Now you don't have to "take it" from the state universities. I like choice! In fact, online now makes all sorts of great choices available to students all overe the world. When I first started in grad school it wasn't that way. Choice and competition makes everybody in the marketplace behave!

Oh, let me add that when it was time for me to add another graduate degree to my vita I did NOT choose the University of Phoenix. Way too expensive. I, instead, went with Morehead State University's online MBA (which recently received AACSB accreditation!). It was also a fraction of what UofP cost. UofP serves a clientele, though. But go in with your eyes open: IT IS COSTLY. If your employer pays for it, why not? But don't take out thousands in loans!

    Traditional vs For-Profit

Agreed cogent, UPhx provides flexible programs for adult learners especially when their employer is paying for the degree. And yes, too many of the traditional B&Ms are inflexible. Just try to get into a UC graduate program as an adult - they want full time students. They need to get real.

I too am surprised UPhx scored so high - they have a very good marketing campaign. UofM and USC are research universities and next to them I'd rate UPhx at about 1%.
