Has anyone out there had any experience with or have any information about Catholic colleges and universities that offer distance learning courses and degrees particularly in liberal arts and sciences? I would welcome any replies. Thanks

There have been some threads about that, but they are lost among all the evangelical Protestant threads.

The best source that I know of on Catholic DL in specifically religious subjects is from the US Catholic bishops. They surveyed every Catholic college and seminary in the US and created a nicely annotated list of DL programs that are open to the laity:

Do you mean Catholic, Catholic or a University with a foundation of Catholic values that only pays lip service?

I know DePaul offers several online courses and a few degrees. It's Vincentian/Catholic, but it isn't exactly what I'd say has a permeating religious feel to the classroom.

In other words, it's Catholic, but it's not Catholic like Notre Dame.

    Catholic DL

The ACCU website (Assn of Catholic Colleges and Universities) has a listing of all member institutions, alas nothing I've found that is strictly DL/Online but it's place to start. http://www.accunet.org/

Jack's link is just for Jesuit institutions but the Jesuits do have the largest number of colleges and universities in the US and that is specially DL.

    Others:

    DePaul University
    Duquesne University
    Neumann College
    Regis University

  10. Tilburg University was called the Katholic University of Brabant (Netherlands) until it changed its name last year. It's fully accredited, over 75 years of age, and government funded. It is a recognized university for the education of Catholic priests in the Netherlands. Brabant is a province (near Belghium) which is historically Catholic. There is a strong and long choral tradition in the province, and there are a number of monastries in Tilburg. Some of them house Trappist monks. Some, I am told, make great beer.

Tilburg U. has a Faculty of Theology, is not in the business of distance ed, but a person could probably do a short residency PhD there, as I have (in the social sciences faculty).

Here is the URL for that faculty:
    http://www.tilburguniversity.nl/faculties/tft/gendesc.html

If you are interested in doing a PhD there (or Masters), then I recommend that you follow the John Bear recommendations for doing foreign degrees, by following the work of a faculty member, and then approaching that person as a potential promoter (that is the term used in Europe). John's recommendations on foreign degrees are found in some of his books.

  11. Another university that has just come to mind is "Gonzaga University" in Washington state. Gonzaga has some interesting programs, and is affiliated with the Jesuits (one of the orders that provided me with education in my younger years). Gonzaga is also regionally accredited. Gonzaga does have some short residency programs.
