Does anyone know of a DL doctorate in Humanities that can be self-designed?

I know about the Union Institute, but I can't afford a program that costs more than my house.

Empresarial University in Costa Rica is a possibility, but I believe some residence is required. Anyone know anything about this school?

The last I heard, Empresarial was found NOT to have the authority to award doctorates. It has agents operating outside Costa Rica that run doctoral programs, but it isn't clear under whose authority those degrees are awarded.

This might be a case like Villareal, where people are "borrowing" the name to issue their own degrees. Or, it could be more like MIGS, where the school (the CEU) didn't seem to have the authority to award the doctorate, but allowed foreign (i.e. U.S.) agents to do so under its auspices. All very murky (and never actually carried out, in MIGS' case.)

I don't think Empresarial doctorates are properly awarded, nor recognized. I also think any acceptance of them is based on the confusion the school--or its agents--creates. Hardly enough to say it is a viable option. Perhaps your explorations will turn up something new on all of this.

If you mean what I think you mean then I think that such a program doesn't really exist. First of all, a PhD in Humanities is a bit of a puzzle because "Humanities" is such a broad area and a PhD program is typically quite focused. I can't understand why a PhD program, because it has to be so focused, couldn't be fit into a specific department (History, Literature, etc.) Maybe because it was interdisciplinary? In that case you'd be looking for an Interdisciplinary PhD program like at Edith Cowan University, not a Humanities program (Like at Central Queensland University) In any case, if you did a research doctorate through one of the British, Australian or South African schools then there would be no course work, just the research and dissertation. You could customize it all you wanted as long as you could find a dissertation supervisor.

I'd have to go back and check the numbers but my guess is that this tuition rate even beats the Australian schools. The residencies will cost some money but so would a plane ticket to Australia.

Here is the site for University of Florida's online Doctorate program, like it says $585.00 for 3 hours of credit ( out of state). They offer degrees in: Classical Civ
    Latin & Roman studies

If buckwheat is not mistaken, the tuition applies to teachers, the rest of us roust-abouts may have to suffer...didn't get a chance to see if the program is teacher/secondary teacher exclusive or the out of state tuition price for the rest of the herd!
Buckwheat is beginning to chomp at the bit for the " get as close as you can Ph.D online in History"
