I am looking for an online six sigma black belt ot master black belt course for under $2500. Most I have found are $5000+. The closest I have found is Fisher - OSU (Morestream) at $2800.

    Anybody found any others?

I'm also searching, I found black belt at $6000
I don't know why the cost is too high where the course is not that much long (around 80 to 130 hrs)

    try this from Villanova
    http://www.villanovau.com/Tuition Information:

    the cost is reasonable
Six Sigma Green Belt (8 weeks) $1,980.00
Six Sigma Black Belt (16 weeks) $3,480.00
Package Discount: Both Courses $4,995.00 (Initial Enrollment)

I looked at the Villanova program, but it was more exspensive and took longer. The Villanova total for Black Belt is $1,980.00 + $3,480.00 = $5460 and 24 weeks, the CSU is $4,950 and 20 weeks, the others are also about 18-20 wks (minimum).

I need to explre the ASQ certification it may be more viable after taking all the IE course I have taken.

    PLEASE, pardon my ignorance!

Could someone enlighten the rest of us, the unitiated, exactly what is this six sigma black belt stuff? What is the objective of the training? What does one do with it?

I've learned a whole lot of things here and this sounds interesting!

    Many thanks in advance!

Yes, please enlighten me! I see this advertised quite a bit - what is the significance of a six sigma black belt (I know six sigma is an SPC calculation - but what is up with the black belt besides the Karate connection?)

Would this help someone trying to break out of engineering into the supply chain managment part of the business?

    What is six sigma

One of the more succint explanations is found at: http://www.isixsigma.com/sixsigma/six_sigma.asp

In esence it is a specialized area of Industrial Engineering heavily using statistical analysis.

There are different levels of Six Sigma Certification.

    White Belt
    Green Belt
    Brown Belt
    Black Belt
Master Black belt (authorized to train)

It is based on statistical methodology for process and operational improvement. There are about 12 modules, each focusing on a concept of six sigma (I am only in green belt status), but it is very valuable in the workforce, I have found.

The six-sigma "fad" seems to be dying (*), at least in the aerospace industry.
I would recommend earning a credential that stands the test of time; e.g. degree in business administration, industrial engineering, quality assurance, statistics, or finance.

(*) I have read several papers and books that debunk the six-sigma program because its statistical premise doees not hold up under scrutiny. See Smith & Whitehall's book "Optimizing Quality in Electronics Assembly" for such a discussion.

I agree with Ian COMPLETELY. The degree is never a passing fad, but certain certifications can be!

I'll third that an academic credential is more timeworthy.

    Mike,

Cool program. Best of luck. I'll have to stick to the low octane version PhD.

I'm not sure if a Six Sigma certification from a non-university entity holds less weight or not, but I came across this site today, which appears to offer distance Six Sigma certification programs.

    Green Belt is $495
    Black Belt is $1995
    Master Black Belt is $2995

Why don't you just test out for the credential with ASQ.

    http://www.asq.org/cert/types/sixsigma/index.html

The cost is less than $300.00 if you don't need study material.

I'm a CQE and CQA. The tests aren't impossible if you have a background in the quality field.
