Pardon the french here, but this story is a booger!! ;-) But this story does go to show how some people want to earn things honestly and will even take a STEP BACK in order to hang a degree on the wall that they are sure they earned.

I was talking to several individuals here in my community (professors) who were all interested in the Associate's Degree I earned with a 3.67 GPA and all seemed to encourage me in completing my Bachelor's. As I became involved in the discussion, I brought up the words, "Saint Regis University in Liberia". Most of the professors looked baffled and simply asked if it met the requirements of U.S. accredidation.

One professor talked about earning an Associate's and warned of taking the "quick" route to a Master's Degree. He wanted to earn a Bachelor's as quickly as possible and "earned" a degree from St. Regis University. After continuing on his wonderful grades from his Associate's (and from St. Regis), he entered into Bellevue University (the same Bellevue that I'm thinking about enrolling in for a Bachelor's Degree, but will likely still choose Excelsior), and went on and earned a PHD. I'm unsure of where this was earned at. Now, years later, he's completing a real Bachelor's from COSC that he will place on his wall in the place of the St. Regis degree. So, apparently, it doesn't bother some people, but it might just come back to bite others (even when they have the job they were aiming for).

  2. It's going to look awfully strange to have a Bachelor's degree on the wall with dates of graduation AFTER his PhD. This might not be a time bomb, but it is close.

One other thing it clearly is - a demonstration of academic fraud on the part of someone who eventually went down the right path, but got there through fraudulent and unrepented previous actions.
