    TESC MSM versus UoL MBA votes requested

    My co-worker and I were comparing Thomas Edison State College's MSM against University of London's MBA. We came up with a comparison matrix as shown below. We'd really like to hear what the forum reader's think and would vote for.

    (+ and - indicates relative good and relative bad attributes and = indicates relative neutral, or both have same)

    UOL (Imperial College):
    Degree: MBA (++)
    Cost: around 20K USD (-)
    Program Strength and International Flavor: (+++)
    International Name Recognition: (+)
    Local (US) Name Recognition: (?)
    Faculty: (++)
    Program Flexibility (allowed time): (=)
    Interaction with Faculty and Fellow Students: (+)
    Recommendations: (++) [Program Director himself gives recommendation, for futher studies, if desired]
    Marketability for Jobs: (++)
    Total Points: 12 (with an error margin of 1, due to ?)

    TESC MSM:
    Degree: Msc Mgmt (+)
    Cost: 16K (+)
    Program Strength and International Flavor: (+)
    International Name Recognition: (-)
    Local(US) Name Recognition: (+) [AT&T had several managers ... ]
    Faculty:(+)
    Program Flexibility (allowed time): (=)
    Interaction with Faculty and Fellow Students: (++) [two weekend on-campus meetings]
    Recommendations:(+)
    Marketability for Jobs: (+)
    Total Points: 9

    Assuming that someone can afford the 20K full amount, it seems UoL is the winner. We appreciate some votes and comments.

    Thanks

    Please disregard the sad faces, they were typos

    I also vote for UoL. I think there is much stronger name recognition - certainly in Europe and Asia. It's a little more of a question mark in the U.S., but I think most employers will be intrigued. A quick elevator speech by you on the long history of the UoL External program and on Imperial College, in particular, and most employers will be impressed (IMHO).

    There's not a huge difference in cost, and I think you get more bang for your buck at UoL.

    The University of London degrees are good if you like essay-style closed book exams. Not all of the assessment is by exam -- but a significant part is.

    Personally, I much prefer exams to projects and assignments -- but mainly because I am very very lazy. I'd much rather spend 3 hours on an exam than dozens and dozens of hours on assignments. So I liked my U. London degree program (though it was not the MBA , but an MSc through Birkbeck).

    I would say UoL. It has instant name recognition, because even if people have not heard of University of London they've heard of London.

    Plus some polls have ranked the Imperial College MBA highly, that gives you something else with which to smack DL non believers.

    If the extra $4k isn't a killer that is.

    In defense of TESC MSM Program:

    Just like anything else I think you take away what you put into it.

    On a more practical note ……. On a Resume / during an interview I imagine it might be easier to avoid having to explain how you obtained your degree from TESC. As my old man (the used car salesman) used to say “If your talkin’, your losin’’. The fact that you obtained your degree from a state college in NJ might raise fewer eyebrows than attempting to validate your European MBA . I’m not saying one is better than the other (because I have not done any research), just looking at this from a different angle.

    What do you think?

    That is the main reason I’ve avoided the EBS MBA , there is no doubt in my mind that it is a great program (programe to them). After all that work to obtain an MBA I would hate to have to explain to someone (who does not understand DL) how I obtained a degree from a school/country I've never been to.
