Just wondering, here. None of the credits I have are DETC credits, but if I wanted to fulfill a requirement at Excelsior by using a class accredited by the DETC, would that be acceptable to Excelsior?

The reason I asked this question was because I found that many of the schools I was looking at to complete a few upper-level courses were accredited by the DETC. (And they were, in most cases, more affordable).

I went to the official website of the DETC at www.detc.org. Once at their website, I visited the "FAQ" page. On this page, I found the question, "Will the credits I receive from a DETC-accredited institution be accepted by a traditional college or university?" The answer provided was as follows: A survey in 2001 among students who had completed DETC courses or degrees showed that those who attempted (only 1 out of 3 did) to transfer their degrees and credits to a regionally accredited institution had the following results - 2 out of every 3 was successful. Still, the site urged those who were planning on transferring their credits to other institutions that the acceptance of the credits was STRICTLY up to the school they were being transferred to. I do believe I found, at one time, a study conducted by John Bear on this matter. I have yet to find this.

    I don't think they do

I remember reading something in Dr. Bear's most recent book about Excelsior not accepting DETC credits.

If I'm wrong here someone will correct me. If the credits have been evaluated by ACE then Excelsior and COSC will likely accept them and that is the core of the issue. If you were to try and and transfer DETC credits to any other American RA school you may have problems (possibly, the point has been deliberated and debated ad nauseum here) but your question is about Excelsior right? Please remember though that Excelsior WILL NOT help you until you matriculate whereas COSC will likely look up a particular class, see if it's been ACE approved and will tell you whether they will take it or not. So, unless you pay Excelsior 975.00 to enroll you will not know for sure if they will take the credits or not.

    Cade,

This is a question best answered by Excelsior. Several DETC schools have had some or all of their courses reviewed and recommended for college credit by the American Council on Education’s College Credit Recommendation Service (CREDIT).

The ACE recommendation will likely enhance the probability of transfer credits being accepted from DETC schools.

Two years ago, I ask this question along with a few others of several colleges. Thomas Edison State College provided the responses below:

"1. Would your college or university consider accepting an American Military University Master of Arts degree as a qualification for admission to a doctorate program?
No, Thomas Edison State College requires students to be graduates of regionally accredited colleges. Since American Military University is not regionally accredited we would not recognize the student of having a required bachelors degree, which is required to enter our master degree programs.

    2. Would your college or university consider accepting an American Military University Bachelor of Arts degree as a qualification for admission to a masters degree program?
No, see the answer to question #1.

    3. Would your college or university consider accepting graduate level transfer credit from American Military University?
No, they are not a regionally accredited university.

    4. Would your college or university consider accepting graduate and undergraduate level transfer credit, which has been evaluated by the American Council on Education (ACE), from American Military University?
Thomas Edison State College would accept the credit recommendations from the American Council on Education. However, we would not consider these transfer credits directly from American Military University.

    5. Would your college or university consider accepting transfer
credit and degrees from other degree granting institutions which are accredited by the Distance Education and Training Council (DETC)?
Thomas Edison State College only accepts credits in direct transfer from regionally accredited colleges. If DETC institutions have their course evaluated by ACE we would accept the ACE credit recommendation. "
