One way of obtaining COSC Written Requirement is by passing CLEP's English Composition with Essay. What are other options of fulfilling this requirement? Is there any independent study that can be completed in a short amount of time to fulfill this requirements?
By the way, COSC is offering an online research class this summer that last 5 weeks. It is 220 dollars for me and is only 1 hr credit but it will fulfill the requirement. My game plan is to try to CLEP English with Essay and then take this class. However, any course that requires you to write a research paper will work. I am always looking for a better way and if I find it I will post it here.
I too tried to get around the strict interpretation of the English requirement (in my case I argued that my numerous journalism credits and the fact that I had worked for years as a writer should satisfy the college of my knowledge of English). But the advisors held to the requirement: complete the appropriate English course or pass the CLEP English with essay. No way around it. Ultimately, I understand the need to have at least some hard and fast rules -- the school is very flexible in so many areas. The fastest route (and the one I chose) is to just take the CLEP. It's fairly easy if you have even a modest grasp of the English language. And if you don't pass it, you would benefit from completing a college English course. Best of luck, Dan
COSC reguires either eng 101 & 102 or the CLEP English Comp with essay (6 credits). The COSC distribution looks like this: (A) Aesthetic Dimensions (C) Citizenship - Ethical Dimensions (E) English - Written Communication (what we're talking about above) (G) Global Society (H) Historical Development (I) Inter-Relationship to Groups (Q) Quantitative and Analytic (math) (R) Research (S) Scientific Process (W) Western Civilization Please note, one art history course can fulfill the W, A, H, and R if there is a research paper.
Take it from a COSC Grad (BS 2000). Charter Oak has a research requirement separate from the Written requirement. Research (R) - 3 credits Students will acquire the ability to discover and formulate problems and synthesize solutions; think critically and reason logically; and use basic research methods to retrieve, evaluate and use information. Examples: Composition and Literature/Introduction to Literature; Upper level Literature courses; seminars, honors courses, Independent Study courses, or any course that requires term papers. Written Communication (E) - 6 credits Students will develop competence in written communication, which includes the ability to apply correct and varied grammatical English structure; edit their writing for correct spelling, punctuation and related details; construct logical arguments, using effective paragraphs and conventional essay forms; form and defend a thesis; incorporate the ideas of others when constructing logical arguments; and use third person format in their writing, as appropriate. Subject area: English composition. Reference your degree plan. http://www.cosc.edu/Forms/deg_plan_4.pdf That is that. The standardized exam counts, but of itself, does not meet the research requirement. My advisor reccommended that I take an English 102 course that required a research paper , so I did. That negated my CLEPs. However, I don't see why a terminal or capstone project in the area of the concentration would not count, as long as there was documented evidence of an associated research requirement such as a paper. In short, get approval from your advisor.
Passing the Excelsior exam "Research Methods in Psychology" will meet the COSC research requirement. Tom
I took the CLEP with essay for the English requirement and the Research Methods in Psychology for the research requirement. It seems to be the quickest and cheapest way if you do not the credits already. For the Research Methods in Psychology I could not find the book recommended by ECE at the library (I did not want to but it) but I did find a book by the same authors on Experimental Psychology. I was able to read the book twice and pass with a "B"
Re: Research requirements at COSC I obtained copies of my syllabi from my two psych classes which clearly stated there were research papers due in the class. I sent them to COSC and they considered the requirement met. Just a thought if you have anything like that in any of the classes you took.
