    Hi,
I am a chemist, I live in Greece and I would like to take some university level astronomy courses by distance. I have done a long enough internet search, and I have seen that most courses either are very expensive for me (for example british OU asks for triple fees when student lives outside UK...) or I know nothing about the college that offers them (for example, the swinburne centre in australia). I believe there would be someone here to help me find my way. I would greatly appreciate.

    Nikos,

There are four programs worth considering; Swinburne University of Technology http://astronomy.swin.edu.au/sao/, University of Western Sydney Nepean http://www.uws.edu.au/astronomy/, University of North Dakoto http://www.space.edu/, and the University of South Africa.

Do a search on this site for "online astronomy" and you'll find a discussion on this topic and these schools.

    Good luck

    Bob

I have taken a course through Indiana Univerity. They only offer 3 astonomy classes but it is a good program. Goto http://www.indiana.edu/~iude/frameset-courses.html and select Credit Courses then
School of Continuing Studies then Distance Education. Good luck

    Nikos,

The University of South Africa (Unisa) offers astronomy courses through the Honors Bachelor by distance, and through the Doctorate with limited time on campus*. Here is the departmental page : http://www.unisa.ac.za/dept/wis/index.html . Courses from Unisa are quite economical with respect to the U.S. Dollar, and may be against the Drachma too.

Since I had seen Unisa mentioned for years on alt.education.distance but nobody seemed to have an inside story about it, I started transcribing my own experiences as I matriculate through one of their undergraduate programs. You're welcome to persuse this at http://marksykes.netfirms.com/unisa/unisa.html .

Bachelor of Science in Mathematics student at Unisa, but taking astronomy courses with a view to the Honors Bachelor in Astronomy later on.

*There is no requirement of residency on the Pretoria campus in the Unisa calendar; however, it does say that at the department's discretion students must appear for meetings with promoters, defense of thesis, or other reasons the department may find appropriate.
