Since my Associate's is in Business, should I??

    Hey,

Once again, I have another question. :-( I'm sorry I'm asking so many! If I were to go into a graduate program, I would prefer it to be in Business, or in Education. Would the quickest route to completion of a Bachelor's at Excelsior be to pursue a Business major? Obviously, since my Associate's is in Business Administration, the credits would "fit" much better. (Or at least in my opinion, according to the "Self-Review" worksheet). Then, whenever people asked what my "major" was, I could at least say "Business", and not have to say, "Well, I took this test to fulfill this requirement", or so on, and it might make it easier to get into a graduate program.

Why am I wanting to finish so quickly, you ask?

I have an opportunity to teach in a school system beginning in Fall of 2004, or Fall of 2005. While I think it's going to be pretty difficult to complete the degree before this August, I still feel it's entirely possible to finish the degree by at least about December. Then, I'm assuming part of the job in the education field would be to pursue some sort of degree (or alternate standing) for the job. Regardless, I have already discussed this with my local university and it doesn't seem to be much of a problem (as long as I do have a Bachelor's). I'm not sure whether or not I would want to teach forever or not, though, so the Business major could come in handy. Once again, though, I'm somewhat lost. The Self-Review sheet for the Excelsior Business Degree shows me that only 15 upper level hours are required. However, over the Arts and Sciences, it says nothing about upper-level. Do you only need 15 upper level hours to complete the degree in Business, or is this a typing error and do some hours upper level need to come from the Arts and Sciences?

  2. It'll be a stretch to do 60ish credits by the end of August, but definitely possible if you apply yourself - I'm on the same path as well having started at zero in mid-December and am now at the halfway point at the end of March.

In no particular order, here are the exams I am taking to reach 120 credits as approved by Excelsior:

    CLEP French
    CLEP Humanities (General)
    DSST Here's To Your Health
    DSST Criminal Justice
    DSST Management Info Systems
    CLEP Principles of Management
    CLEP Principles of Marketing
    DSST Drug/Alcohol Abuse
    CLEP Macroeconomics
    CLEP Microeconomics
    CLEP Analyzing & Interpreting Literature
    CLEP Accounting
    DSST Introduction to Computing
    CLEP Introductory Business Law
    DSST Business Law II
    DSST Principles of Supervision
    DSST Introduction to Law Enforcement
DSST History of the Vietnam War
    DSST Astronomy
    CLEP Natural Science (General)
    CLEP Western Civilization I
    CLEP Western Civilization II
    TECEP English Composition
    CLEP Information Systems
    DSST Statistics
    TECEP Operations Management
    ECE Management of Human Res
    ECE Organizational Behavior
    ECE Ethics Theory
    DSST Principles of Finance
    ECE Labor Relations
    ECE Business Policy/Strategy
    CLEP Calculus

To my knowledge as long as you have the 12 required upper level credit hours for business (not 15) you don't need any others. The BS General Business "pie chart" on page 19 of the catalog is pretty clear.

For "pre-authorized" tests you can take to meet the core, advanced and other degree requirements take a look at pages 35/36 in the catalog. There will be other options available but these don't require any thought.

Don't forget the Information Literacy requirement with Excelsior (1 credit). Also, Business Policy/Strategy won't be offered by Excelsior after 9/30 so you don't want to delay...

    Cheers,
    Mark
