I'm considering going for a doctoral degree following my MBA from Nova Southeastern. I received my BBA from Baker College online last year.

I am considering either Nova's DBA program or Capella's PhD program in Business.

My wife is planning on enrolling in Nova's MBA program next year so the online format of Capella interested me.

Getting my DBA at Nova would not be as convenient, but I want to make a good decision money-wise and career-wise.

I wanted to get the doctoral degree to publish and also to consult. Maybe teaching would be of interest down the line.

Does anyone have any experience or knowledge that they could share on either Capella's or Nova's doctoral programs in business?

    Thanks.

I have experience with Nova's DBA having graduates in 1996 (and completing some additional courses since). Overall, I'm very positive with the program. I like the residency they require - it allows you to really get to know peers and faculty. Some may be able to work on a more isolated basis, but for me NSU's model worked very well.

NSU has a long tradition of offering DL programs in business, computer science and education. The school is large (upwards to 20,000 students) and has an unusual blend of traditional (including law, medicine, pharmacy, psychology and undergraduate) and non-traditional (business, education and computer science) programs. I can say that their library resources (both on-campus and off-campus) are one of the best I've seen. They don't just have "some"on-line resources - they seem to have virutally every on-line resource in existance. This can really matter when you get into dissertation work.

Since graduating I have gone into full-time teaching and have published a fair amount. While any DL credential may be looked down upon by some, my NSU DBA has worked well.

Do realize that NSU is working to change its DBA to a PhD in the near future.

I really can't comment much on Capella. I'm somewhat biased against them based on the fact that they are for-profit and virtual only, but this is my persepctive. One difference I could point out is that NSU employs a cast of full-time faculty in addition to part-time adjuncts. I'm not sure, but I think Capella has very few full-time faculty.

I suspect that either credential would be about as useful as the other. The real issue when it comes to success in the work place (and academic world) is what collection of abilities do you have? A DBA or PhD is a valuable credential, but it is only part of the picture. Knowing how to conduct research and teach are also very important.

    Thanks

Thank you for your reply Andy. You are right about the resources available at NSU. I was more concerned about pursuing the program while my wife is in school.

I may just wait until she's finished before going back to Nova.

By the way, did you do any of the program DL or did you have to go on campus once a month?

E-mail the Chair person of Capella's Business School

Why don't you e-mail Dr. Sheila Fournier-Bonilla who is the chair person for Capella's business school and put all the pros and cons next to Nova's and see what she has to tell you. Tell her that a Capella learner refered you to her. She loves to talk to prospective students who are comparing. She lives down the street from Nova and is aware of Nova's program. Capella's programs are very innovative. So do not discount Capella because it is for-profit. I am in the School of Psychology and I have nothing but accolades. I am going into my doctoral comps. The professors are quite accomplished and not as stuck as brick and mortar schools.

    Here is her e-mail:

    Best regards...

Gilbert - you might want to contact Kristie Tetrault at [email protected] regarding the DBA program at Nova. She is the admistrator of the program and an enthusiastic supporter. She can provide information that may help you decide. Tell her Andy Borchers sent you.

I read a great article in the Chronicle I believe about you and your Nova education. I was born and raised in Flint, MI. How are things at Kettering?

    Re: Andy

Kettering is doing just fine. The school is continuing to diversify from its automotive roots - adding biomedical, applied math, and applied physics to its curriculum and research.
