Hi, I hope someone can help and give some advice. I live in the United Kingdom and am currently not working. I have always wanted to be a teacher but not in a classroom situation. I would like to become a Distance Learning Tutor. I am currently in the third year of a BA (Hons) Degree and have not teaching experience. I used to work as a clerical assistance in various offices but did not enjoy the work. This is what I would like to know. I am wondering what the best subject to teach on a distance learning basis would be? Would it be teaching some form of computer course? If so, what level? Are there any other subjects that would be better to start teaching on a distance learning basis? You see, I don't want to have to go through the classroom route of training to become a teacher because it's teaching by distance learning or online that I want to do? Please can you tell me if there is any way that I can pursue this career after I've completed my degree that didn't involve any form of classroom training? I have social phobia and it's something that I have tried to overcome for several years with the help of a counsellor. I know that I could teach on a distance learning basis and even talk to students on the telephone. Any advice you can give will be appreciated. Thanks. Regards
Statistics, perhaps? If you're referring to teaching at the university level, all I can tell you is that my employer has a growing online campus and that they have the most trouble finding Statistics instructors. You'd need an MSc in Statistics to be considered. Avoid IT; computer instructors are not really in demand these days. Of course, the other thing to consider is that if you select a field you don't enjoy, you may not be very good at instructing in it. -=Steve=-
Were I interested in a new field but unsure of my qualifications then I would interview with a company I had no intention of working for to get a guage of my standing. You, in turn, might query some of your least favorite distance learning schools to help determine your standing.
