    ULTIMATE IRONY OF AMERICAN POLITICS

And most pervasive irony as well!

When running for office, education is almost ALWAYS the holy grail.

When it comes time for the politicians to put OUR money where their mouths were during the campaign, there always seems to be an excuse. How sad!

Here in Louisiana we have a brand-new governor. The first woman ever elected governor in Louisiana's history. She ENJOYED BROAD SUPPORT from teachers, and their student's families, in her camapaign last year from her constant and far-reaching promises for teacher pay raises.

She is a former teacher herself.

She just finished her first legislative session and guess what?

There just isn't enough money to deliver on pay raises for teachers! As Gomer Pyle would say SURPRISE SURPRISE SURPRISE!

BUT WAIT! I'M GETTING A VISION, ITS A LITTLE FOGGY BUT, ...I THINK, ... YES I BELEIVE I CAN SEE A SMALL TEACHER PAY RAISE COMING, YES YES YES THERE IT IS, IN THE LEGISLATIVE SESSION OF 2007! THERE WILL BE A SMALL TEACHER PAY RAISE AND A WHOLE BAG FULL OF OTHER GOODIES FOR THE LOCAL SCHOOL SYSTEMS!!!!!

..............AND WAIT, IT'S IT'S IT'S ...........JUST THE BEGINNING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wait a minute, isn't 2007 our next state-wide genreal election?

    SURPRISE SURPRISE SURPRISE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This should make for an interesting morning discussion. I live 5 houses up the road from the Lt. Gov. I guess I should wait for her to take her dog out for a walk, and stop her for a chat.

She has patiently listened to my prior comments for COSC support, so this should be nothing new.

Guess I should write out a check to the COSC foundation in the mean time.

"Hmm," the legislators will say. "Private donations increase when we suspend the matching grants, so why should we restore the grants?" :(

My sister is a teacher in a small town in that state and she was an avid supporter/follower of the campaign. In fact, she says she still has 3 big crates full of campaign paraphenelia in her garage! She will probably have to hock all of that junk to subsidize for her not getting a raise until three years from now...if it happens then!
