MBA or MS in Technology Management V.S MBA

Hello everyone,

I am looking into graduate degree decisions for next year and I had a question. I like it and would like to stay in the it field but with the IT jobs being out souced now I want a degree that is versitle so that If for some reason the company that I am working for decides to outsource I can use the degree as just mba and still be able to find employment elsewhere until I can fimd another job in IT . My question is this If I get my MBA in technical management or MS in Information technology management will I be able to use it for jobs that are not tech related at all or should I just get a plain mba without a concentration? I was also considering the MS in Information technology management but I am almost sure that this degree is not versitle at all . I also eventually plan to get a technical masters but woulld like to get the Managemnet type degree first . What do you think?

 

In my opinion a basic MBA will provide more opportunities than the other options you mention. It will allow you to pursue positions in education, service industry, finance, marketing, import/export (some must deal with foreign outsources), management, government, etc.
And you can always earn a second masters.

 

I've been in the exact same predicament, even down to the fear of outsourcing. On one hand, a masters focused on MIS or some other variation of IT management, coupled with my IT experience, would probably help me advance on my current career ladder. However, an MBA will probably equally help me in my current career as well as open doors to many other career paths as well. For me and my desire to open a few other career doors, going the MBA route at this point makes the most sense. And as Mr. Anderson mentioned, you can always go after another master's degree later on.
