    Length for Ph.D.

Most people do NOT know that doctorates may indeed last up to ten years. It is the rare person that does it in three years full-time. That is due to a number of reasons that I have gone into here in the past. However, I will say this: Have a damn good reason to want to get a doctorate. I had somebody at my college ask me why I did not go for a Ph.D. and I pulled out the pay schedule for faculty at my community college and showed her where I was and what the Ph.D. would put me at. Her response was, "A doctorate gets you only $1,800 more a year???" ha ha ha. EXACTLY. If I had a huge ego and needed to have "I AM A PH.D." tattooed on my forehead, maybe I'd do it. So the bottom line is HAVE A DAMN GOOD REASON to go down this road. AND, the overall completion rate is at BEST about 50%, even lower for some fields. What I have never understood is why somebody would go after a Ph.D. in the humanties, for instance, where it is nearly IMPOSSIBLE to get a tenured position at a university and where the completion rates are maybe 30%. I guess it is like bungee jumping. I'd never think of doing that but others think it is a great thrill.

As cogent said, the PhD route is a long and winding road, actually some one else siad that, but I parapharse. I went that route over the masters route, because I would need to take only two additional courses and a dissertations versus a thesis. I also figured that if I get into the dissertation phase and decide enough is enough I could convert to a masters in engineering.

A realistic goal for a PhD or DBA from a reputable university is about 6-8 years part time. Bear in mind that this is part-time and it makes sense since the full time DBA is about 4 years full time.

I'm registered at USQ as a DBA student and I'm in my fifth year and have one more year to go. The maximum allowed time is 8 years for DBA USQ but 6 seems to be more the standard for most of the students. This also depends of the student, if you are a genious and can generate results quite fast then you might been able to finish it in less time.
