It has come to my attention the Southern California University for Professional Studies (SCUPS) is up for accreditation with the DETC. An article in the Chronicle of Higher Education (April 25, 1997) stated SCUPS had been blacklisted by the Government of Thailand as a diploma mill or for selling degrees. (The article wasn't real clear.) If any degree.info readers have any comments on SCUPS you should notify the DETC at [email protected] as soon as possible.
SCUPS is a real school. The Thais have probably screwed it up. Dr Hecht has too much at stake to sell degrees.
1997!!!! Anything could have happened! The article may be right, but from what I hear in recent days, the school is very strict in its overseas operations.
I doubt that this article will have any real effect on SCUPS. The DETC would reject their application in an instant if such practises were administered overseas.
I don’t think a 1997 article (which may or may not have been accurate) is particularly relevant. Except in extreme circumstances, DETC and other accrediting bodies evaluate schools on what they’re doing today, not years ago.
