Does anyone know of a US RA masters degree in creative writing or something close to it that does not require an oncampus residency? Writing is just a hobby of mine and I thought that at some point I might like to take a masters program just for self enrichment.
Ooh, ooh, I know one! University of New Orleans has a "low-residency" MFA where the summer "residency" is a month in Europe. I think they have several different sites. The rest of the work is online.
Re: Check The Union Institute That program looks very interesting but the only problem is it requires a 10 day residency twice a year. My current employment situation will not allow me that much time.
Overseas Think you may have to go offshore for that one and it won't be called an MFA. I have researched that one to death, from antioch, vermont, naropa, UNC greensboro, Even here in town at Warren Wilson. If I go that direction, I'm opting for Queens University in Charlotte NC, it right down the road for me and they actually act like they want me as a student (new concept in such programs).
Re: Overseas Thanks for the info and perhaps in time Queens would be good for me, at the moment however, I get a very short amount of vacation time, and when I account for the few personal things I have to attend to I don't have sufficient time to do the on campus residency components. I don't necessarily require an MFA, I'd consider even a liberal studies or interdisciplinary studies that allowed a concentration in writing. I thank you all for your responses thus far .
Thanks Mike! I did not realize CSUDH offered coursework in creative writing but their FAQ lists it. I will contact them for more info. I appreciate your taking the time to post the link.
here's something http://www.universitycollege.du.edu/program/academic/oncampus/mals/degreeplansoverview.asp?DegreePlanID=42 if you're not too hepped up on the masters. Here is the offshore option I was prattling on about. http://www.ahs.cqu.edu.au/humanities/mlitt/creat_course.html And here's one I'm looking at with great lust. http://www.queens.edu/graduate/programs/creative_writing.asp And this is in my home town but I just don't dig the school that much. http://www.warren-wilson.edu/~mfa/ I think these are all short res, except for the aussie one. good luck!
not a degree program but... While not a degree program, here's a 13-week online Creative Writing course offered by a Stanford English Emerita Professor via Alllearn.org. A direct link to the course is here. I attended my first Alllearn course, the Globalization Economics, last month and enjoyed it immensely.
Oherra, Here are some more options: Manchester Metropolitan University Lancaster University (short summer residency required, but last time I talked with them, they were considering dropping it for foreign students.) University of Western Sydney Southern Cross University Central Queensland University And Mountain State University in West Virginia has an MA in Interdisciplinary Studies.
My wife has a Masters from University of Nothern Iowa in Creative Writing. Although she did hers in residence, they do have some distance learning options. www.uni.edu
There are at least two or three regulars here who have this degree, and my wife is currently in the program.
