Question regarding University of London External Programme BA Philosophy

I live in NY and I looked at their program and its really impressive (pricewise also). I have seen plenty of posters talk about it, but I haven't (yet) encountered anyone with a degree from there.

    I have the following questions:

    1. Where would the exams be held typicaly. I read somewhere there are around 250 exam centers (centres?) in USA. Does anyone have any idea where in NY one might be?

    2. The program is not at all like US Bachelor counterparts. You just take a very very concentrated dose of what you really want to study...and you pretty much study all on your own. The exams determine everything. If I later on want to use the BA for graduate admissions to a traditional graduate school in philosophy in USA, will it be accepted?

    3. Most graduate applications in USA require Recommendations from Professors. Clearly in this case there are no "professors". How would one work around this?

FYI: I was educated originally in the British way (GCE O'LEVELs), so I am well aware of the extrmely high standards of the exams involved.

Hi Daniel, I have also been tempted by that Philosophy program quite often. I also think it is an excellent program. I am sure you'll have no problems to do your examinations in NYC, the capital of the world. I am sure that succesful completion of the program will suffice to seek graduate admission at American Universities. Of course, for more competitive programs there will be additional requirements such as a high GPA, personality traits, recommendations, etc,... Perhaps other posters can explain how
reference letters work at the U of L.

Good luck and keep us posted if you decide to enroll. I might follow you soon :)

I have yet to enter the first set of exams so I can't speak from experience, however, it is my understanding that there is a consortium of U.S. universities that do various things for each other and that member universities will invigilate your exams.

I THINK I will be able to write my exams at the University of Texas at El Paso. Hope so; it's only 40 miles away!

Last year UoL was using test centers that were a part of the NCTA (National College Testing Association). A link to eligible test centers is here:

A quick check in NY turns up:

    Mercy College - Dobbs Ferry
    Nassau CC - Garden City
DeVry Inst. - Long Island City
    RIT - Rochester
    Westchester CC - Valhalla

I took my U. of London exams at Brookdale Community College in NJ.

Brookdale is listed in the NCTA database that Tom57 mentions.
