I'd like to hear of others experiences with Excelsior evaluating transcripts?

I just received an "Unofficial Summary" from them and was surprised to find a requirement for 3 hours in Written English with an annotation that "...you must sucessfully complete a college composition course..." when there is such a course with the grade of an "A."

Did anyone find such minor errors in their own evaluations? Is it common for them to overlook a course or two on these unofficial evals?

I'm going to call them on Monday to discuss it with them, but I'd like to know of any similar experiences any of you may have had.

Thank you in advance for any comments or observations!!!

Yes - it happened with me.
However, on the matter of the comp requirement, Excelsior is often a stickler and unaccomodating.

    GunSmoke,

Yes, I have had mistakes on my transcript. I emailed them with my reasoning behind believing they messed up. They agreed and fixed it. If you have a 3 semester hour course in English Composition (ENC101, ENG101, ENG1101, etc.), I think you should email them asking why they can not accept it. What are they going to do (not give you credit for english comp)? ;) . They may have just overlooked it (happens a lot on Friday afternoons I am sure).

    Best Regards,
    Bill

I haven't had any problems with Excelsior's evaluations...of course, my was done over a year ago (in winter/spring 03).

The only couple of courses they didn't accept or couldn't accept were three different courses:
    - one was a university introduction course: "A Welcome to College" course...1 credit hour.

    - I had two fundamental Math courses that were from a community college, and according to their transfer policies, the college is only allowed to accept "X" number of credits transferred into Excelsior from a community college. So even though "all" those courses from the community college would be accepted, I had to choose 2, that wouldn't be officially accepted into my program.

The good news about those two courses, was they'll still show up on my transcript from Excelsior, but not as part of the degree program I am enrolled in. They show up as "extras".

However, I have been keeping a close, close track of all my courses taken and submitted into the program, keeping all the email documentations...so I have proper records.

The only advice, I can give anyone preparing to enroll into Excelsior College is to keep superb documentation!!! Print out all email responses from advisors, and record all names and dates of advisors whom you have corresponded with regarding all situations regarding your program! Trust me, it will come in handy!
I have had a couple scenarios where I have had way too many academic advisors advising me on my program...and had things all screwed up majorly!
Where to the point where I had all my documentation to prove them otherwise.
*It had gotten so screwed up at one point...that I bitched so much about having too many chiefs in the huddle...that I only deal with the head of the academic advisors in my degree program only!!!
No one else is allowed to advise me in my remaining program.
And boy, they were so sorry too....they apologized numerous of times...even the Dean sent me a letter apologizing for the screw-ups.

Other than that.....they are a good college....I am graduating in June/July 04....and all my documentation paid off!
    :D

Good for you. I have found that documenting is really the only way to survive in this world. I intend to do the same with my education. I'm awaiting evaluation from EC, been two weeks since I sent them everything. Hope they get on with it soon.

    Thanks to all who responded!

It's just comforting to know that others have had similar experiences, and to know that EC will make thier mistakes right.

It is English Composition, it is from a four-year RA institution and I beleieve it was an oversight because it appears twice on my transcript the first time as a waiver with advanced placement and the second time when I actually took the course and was given credit for a higher-level English course.

EC tells you six to eight weeks for the eval but mine was three weeks and one day from the date the transcript was mailed, so I am happy with thier promptness.

Now I only have a single transcript and all of the credit is from classroom delivered coursework at a private four-year RA institution, so the eval is rather straight forward.

My primary concerns were the age of my credits (approaching 30 yrs beginning this June) and distribution, which met the requirments of the University I attended at the time. Apparently the age is no problem but there are a distribution issue or two which I still have to figure out in counseling with EC.

Thanks again to all who responded, I'm going to call tomorrow but may take the documentation advice and email first. I'll let you all know the outcome.

I had the opposite problem. On my unoffical eval, everything was ok. When they did the official one, they dropped off two courses. One was Freshman Comp and the other was a CompTIA certification. I emailed them (as I was registered at this point) and they quickly corrected things. I haven't had any problems since then (November 2003).

One of the things I was told by Excelsior when I finally got a warm body on the other line was that during the initial evaluation, they will err on the side of caution. If they are unsure if a class will meet their criteria, they will not put it as meeting that requirement so you don't have unhappy surprises when you file to graduate. Have you found that to be correct? I went so far as to include the syllabus from my math class with my transcrpts so as not to have a nasty surprise at the very end by them suddenly not taking my math and leave me scrambling to pick up my most dreaded subject. Do you think they honor their evaluations?

    As to this:

I had two fundamental Math courses that were from a community college, and according to their transfer policies, the college is only allowed to accept "X" number of credits transferred into Excelsior from a community college. So even though "all" those courses from the community college would be accepted, I had to choose 2, that wouldn't be officially accepted into my program.

How many community college credits can I get away with transfering into a BS in Business @Excelsior (ball park)?
