    Hi,
I am considering majoring in healthcare information technology, but have been reading and hearing a lot lately about the outsourcing of jobs to other countries, particularly India. This has caused me to reconsider and am wondering if anyone has any information as to this and other types of jobs that are and aren't safe from this fate.

  2. Considering HIPAA regulations I wonder how much can really get outsourced to India. Applications development? Probably. Systems monitoring? Maybe. Offshore hosting of patient data? Questionable.

    Cheers,
    Mark

yeah I dont think healthcare IT will be outsourced. You need patient monitoring and other systems local, since the patients are local. I believe Healthcare (including health IT) is one field thats not going abroad, atleast not in near future.

Third party provider data i.e. insurance and HMO information processing is already being outsourced.

Correct, at a happy hour event with my RN girlfriend, I spoke with a Cardiologist whose statements confirm your suspicion. His multi-doctor clinic outsources transcription to Singapore.

IMHO, to avoid this we must concentrate on something that is not repetive work. We need to find something in which we are indiviually creative, something requiring judgement and has to be done on-sight.

    Peace

When I was deciding to leave banking in 1995 I spent a great deal of time trying to figure out what job wouldn't be either replaced by a computer or sent over seas. That's why I chose nursing. Alas, it has so many other problems now related to it that I wonder sometimes about my choice. Still, it is creative, requires judgement and has to be done on-sight so I got part of it right.
