    Hi everyone,

I think I will apply formally at Troy State University BSCS program. I have talked with their advisor many times and they have answered many questions. They are also very liberal with CLEP/DANTES exams. Does anyone know if their degree would have any word saying "distance", "online", "external" etc ? Also the advisor mentioned TSU University College ? why is it called University College ?

    Thanks.

    Hi Etech

University College is the divsion that handles distance learning. Definately an improvement over the former "Florida and Western Regions" name they had been using.

Congrats etech, Troy St's program looks to be very good for the price. What prompted you to give up on the Big 3 route you had been considering? I personally am finding it tough to come up with a full test plan for an Excelsior IT degree.

Many things specially the evaluation from ECE. It cost me a lot of money and what I got was 2 years of credits completely taken away from the evaluation. Now I have two more courses that I took from a college in Canada, which I did not had at the time I got the evaliuation from ECE. I contacted them so they can add those two courses in the initial evaluation. They want $350 to do that! That is unbelieveable. Further as you said finding tests is difficult specially on Canadian side.

Going with big 3 I would have taken courses from different college/universities. When I would be ready to apply to a Masters program I know it would be a nightmare to go and collect my official transcripts from all those colleges. I know they would not accept transcripts from Excelsior alone cause it would say which college the courses were taken from. So they would want from the original institutions. I think I will keep it simple and deal with one institution.

    Hi Dave,

so that means the degree that you get is from their College and not from the University ? I think it would be better to get the degree from the University. So can you say in your resume you got it from Troy State University or would you have to say you got it from TSU College .. yikes, would not sound good.

    Hi Etech

Many schools list both the University and the College on the diploma. I see no problem listing it simply as Troy State University. If you wander around the Troy State web sites you can find quite a bit of info on their planning efforts. They look serious about incorporating distance learning into all of their sites. I see it as a great program and school. Congrats on your choice!

Etech - You get a degree that says Troy State University, University College. A lot of large universities have different college as part of them. I know that Rutgers University in NJ has several - Douglas, Livingston, Cook, and Rutgers College. Your degree says Rutgers University, then lists the actual college below. The TSU degree is the same. He was just saying it is better for the degree to say University College than saying Florida and Western Region, which is where you are actually studying through...

so I would still be able to put on my resume Troy State University ? without mentioning University College.

Sure, I know I will. I am starting TSU for Poli Sci next term. The only way anyone will know is if they request your transcript from the school, then it will say University College....

This is how I put it on my resume:

Bachelor of Science in Computer Science - Troy State University
(currently enrolled - 95/120 semester hours completed)

That's where the tuition payments are sent to, so that's what I am putting.

Listen, I am sure there are some occupations (education and law comes to mind) that it REALLY does matter what school you received your under-graduate degree from and whether is was B&M or online/correspondence. However, I think a lot more jobs DON'T require a degree from a prestigious traditional sounding university.

On the TSU website, not sure where I read this exactly but there is a distance learning FAQ. Where the question is asked about the diploma. I believe the answer was the diploma looks exactly like the ones the B & M students receive and does not say anything about the method used to obtain the degree.

Yes, I also recall reading the same thing on their FAQ. This was a biggie for me and for the most part the only reason that I selected TSU instead of Big 3. I am starting a Pol-Sci Major this next term (March 15). Interesting to note what you mention about University College though. On everything I have sent to them, HS transcripts etc., I have been directed to address it to TSU Florida & Western Region.

etech......I would be very, very careful listening to some of the advice you were given concerning what to put on your resume for a BS from Troy State.

The BS program is not administered by the Troy State University campus in Troy Alabama. You will note that it is a satellite of Troy State University. I would put down exactly what it will say on the diploma as far as the location of the school.

As a simple example, there is a distinction between Oklahoma State University and Oklahoma State University at Tulsa. Saying you are an OSU grad on your resume when you actually graduated from the OSU campus in Tulsa is misleading.

I am a graduate of Troy State University. (MS ) The graduate program is administered through the main university while the BS programs are not. I will tell you that getting a BS from Troy State regardless of what it says for the location is creditable to me. I know how rigorous the program was and I would be pround to complete a degree regardless of the campus from that institution. However, if I was interviewing a candidate who did not put fully accurate info on his/her resume, I would not be impressed.

I appreaciate your suggestions florida55. This is the only institution that could possibly fit my budget in terms of tution and I like the program. My first choice being Excelsior but I will have to pass on that due to them having too much reliance on third party evaluators which I cant deal with anymore.

    Man, let's nit-pick

Well, in all fairness, I guess I should finally confess. I did not attend the Killeen Campus of Central Texas College. I attended their classes in Germany when I was assigned there. (There it is said, the lies have been killing me all these years) I guess I should, also, specify which of the couple of dozen or so posts where they had classes. What about the fact that I went to 3 different education centers on 3 different posts for my classes? Should I list them all? What about the fact my diploma doesn't say European Campus? Should that have some impact.

Put what's on the diploma and to heck with all of these "experts" who never had to participate in a military program like Troy offers. When I took a Troy State class in Europe the professor was actually from Troy living there for a couple of years. Let's not be ridiculous.
