Has anyone had any dealings with Fort Hays State University in Kansas? I'm active duty navy and could capitolize on there Bacholars in General Studies (networking and telecommunications). I'm going to separate in January and feel this is a good program due to the intense level of Info Tech courses they offer in the program (also a CISCO type acadamey). Plus their tutition is pretty cheap for distance learning resident or non-resident. So if anyone here has any dealing with them, any input would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you,

We give them a nice writeup in the 14th edition of Bears' Guide, Nathan. Seems quite a decent alternative. However, despite the specialties available, there have been some people posting to this forum about a possibly lesser value to an almost 'generic' degree like a Bachelor of General Studies. Many good options in the IT world have been discussed in this forum (which has a pretty good search engine), as well as in "Bears' Guide to the Best Computer Degrees by Distance Learning."

    Best wishes in your quest.

Would you consider a recommendation for FHSU to obtain upper level credit then trasfer it over to a school like Excelisor College? I've considered them also but FHSU could be a cheap yet "generic" methhod and also ato get to upper level credit I need to satify Excelisor's requirements for a BS in CIS. I could kill two birds with one stone.....get the "good education" and a degree (Bach in General Studies) from FHSU and get the "good name" and degree (BS in Computer Information Systems) from Excelisor. Having two bachalors for two different schools using the one curriculum. Could this be a sound theory?

    Any Comments?

I work in the IT field and can tell you that hardly anyone I work with has a degree in IT. As I look around the project I am currently working on, I see two people, out of 15, who have a degree in information systems or computer science. I have a degree in business. The others are: civil eng, electrical eng, history, jd(law), english, chemistry, biology, etc. We have programmers, analysts, designers, architects, and DBAs, and qa people engaged.

Other projects I have worked on usually have around a 50/50 mix of computer degreed people vs other degrees. In IT one may have any number of backgrounds(experience and what you know vs. a degree type).

IT sucked up a LOT of the engineers in the country during Y2K, and even now. (not that Americans have an easy time of getting an engineering job here anyway due to the H-1B program).

In the old days, not long ago actually, a large part of IT came from the accounting arena. These people were often the biggest users of data. It was not at all uncommon for a CIO to be from accounting. Now, it appears to look a little bit different.

The trend is moving toward the computer degrees for hiring. Still, when I interview a person I don't even look at the their degree. I am looking at their skills and whether they will fit into the culture here. Can you write a program? Can you analyze a system? Can you talk to the customer?
