Overall, a good article and a reality check. Nontraditional institutions typically cater to a different educational market than the traditional schools (i.e. the adult learner). Nonetheless, the lines become more and more blurred as traditional schools offer distance learning programs as well as distance learning options are being made available for many of its full time traditional students. My daughter who is now a senior at a large traditional institution is taking two DL courses from her university in order to finish up her degree and graduate this May. The DL options circumvent many of the problems that class scheduling causes in trying to get classes.

When I was teaching as an adjunct at a Tier II national research university I had students often make comments that they were glad to see a professor who was bringing some real world experience into the classroom and just wasn't focused on their own research efforts. This was important to them because after graduation most of them would be looking for work.

I am waiting to open a bottle of champagne sometime in the future when I see more nontraditional academic grads fulltime at major universities such as Harvard, MIT, etc. I believe someday that this will happen. DL grads -- Don't give up and continue to push the envelope! :)
