    yes.

See http://fletcher.tufts.edu/academic/degree.shtml for some info about the Fletcher School (Tufts) degrees.

In a number of PhD programs a masters is awarded after successful completion of required coursework and a comprehensive (written) exam. At this point the student's focus shifts more fully to research and the eventual writing of a thesis. The amount of time to receive a masters this way (in the course of pursuing a full-time PhD program) can be quite short-- two semesters is common. Finishing both masters and PhD in four years is not at all unusual.

One small point: Tufts is actually in Medford, a suburb of Boston.

    Re: yes.

The medical school is in Boston, right next to the old Combat Zone (ask a Bostonian what that means).

Also, it's the Fletcher School of Law & Diplomacy, which isn't a law school in the ABA sense (they don't offer a J.D.).

The Fletcher School is highly selective.

Fletcher seems to specialize in international affairs and leadership. It offers a "Master of Arts in Law and Diplomacy", but I wouldn't call it a "law school", because it doesn't offer the "Juris Doctor" degree, which is the degree lawyers have.

"Medford, MA" is certainly the correct address for Tufts; but I'd call Medford a city in Greater Boston, not a "suburb of Boston". Greater Boston is one continuous metropolis, like Greater London.

No....Medford is most certainly a suburb of Boston.

    1980-1984 could...

I could actually be closer to 5 years. I arrived in Germany the first time in January 1980 and I left in October 1984. That would be 4 years and 10 months. Yes, with diligence one could finish a PHD in that time. I believe I read somewhere once the average time to PHD was 5 years.

Admission is very competitive, and many more people are rejected than accepted.

    Is this a real post?

One has to wonder, when the misspellings are so obvious, whether this is a lark. Purposely random? No offense meant but... are you for real, my friend?

Tell that to anyone who grew up in Greater Boston - these towns and communities are SUBURBS of Boston. Greater Boston is only used to refer to the region. Most people from Medford don't refer to themselves as from Boston, but from "near Boston" or the Boston Area. My hometown is surrounded on 3 sides by Boston, and was originally a part of Boston, but don't try to tell me I'm from Boston - I'm not.

Bruce - yes, the med school is near the Combat Zone - never did completely understand where the name came from but I like the name better tan "red light district"

It's actually the Fletcher School, (in the city of Medford, MA - population 55,765 http://www.city-data.com/city/Medford-Massachusetts.html). Why not call the school to verify degrees and dates? i doubt anyone here knows what degress they were awarding in 1984. You can reach the Fletcher School at (617)627-3700.

That very unofficial nickname came after quite a few people were killed in street robberies and by pimps in the zoned "adult entertainment" area. The Combat Zone is pretty much gone except for the Liberty Bookstore and Glass Slipper bar.

    BTW....it's pronounced "Meffid". :D
