I've noticed that most DL classes require proctors. Who is a Proctor and How can I get one to supervise me while taking an exam?

    Thanks!

    Kelly,

Each school will have guidelines to follow. For instance, California College for Health Sciences will accept a librarians, administrators, directors of personnel, human resources personnel, counselors, directors of education, etc. Teachers and clergy are not allowed.

    Proctors 101

    Hey Miss Kelly:

I can only speak to the practices of Excelsior regarding your question, so here goes:

If one must use the services of a Proctor for Excelsior exams as an example, the choices are to go to your local college/university and have them proctor (invigilate) your exam(s). Or, as in my case, use your local high school. Exams are sent to the named Proctor - a math teacher in my instance - and a time is chosen to sit for the test. You take your test, and the Proctor sends it off to Excelsior for grading.

I pay $20.00 CDN for this service. It takes my less than 5 minutes for me to travel from my office to the school to do my stuff.

In summation, a Proctor is simply an individual approved by your school to monitor the exam process, ensuring that strict standars are maintained: no cheating, right?

Are you sure you require a proctor? I only need one because I live too far away from a Sylvan learning centre. If I was near one of these centres I would be able to take computer based tests with the bonus of getting my results asap!

    Hope this helps! Good luck!

    Regards,
    Dan

Different schools have different requirements for proctors. Some will let you use a librarian, others require that your proctor be a full-time college/university employee. BYU has a database of proctors:

    http://testing.byu.edu/NCTA/Consortium/find.asp

Whatever school you are attending will be able to tell you what they require for a proctor. In a pinch you should be able to go to your local community college and use their services.

As far as who to call in the university/college that you want to proctor your exam, the advice I was given (and took) was to call the continuing education department of the university. They seem to be the department that handles proctoring other schools exams the most, at least at the schools I was at.

    My wife uses...

the testing center at the local community college as proctor for her exams from Troy State.

A few caveats about using local colleges and schools. They often work on standard school year with all the holidays and such. Also they can be somewhat slow in notifying you that your test has arrived or in sending it back ( usually because the mail comes to a central point and is sorted and distributed from there often with part time student help). this can lead to delays. When I first started I was using the local community college, but ran in to a problem at the end of the semester as they (local cc) was closing for the the Christmas holiday about the 18th and would not reopen until the 8th. The exam was mailed on the 12th, but as of the morning of the 18th had not arrived (or been found) by the testing center. It had to be returned no later than the 5th.

I checked and swtiched my proctor to the manager of my HR department and then took it at the office. I have contiued this way since then.

Lesson: make sure the testing site will be available whenyou need it at the end of the term. this is because each school has their own schedule and also DL components of regualr classes often run one to two weeks behind.

FYI: I am in the Industrial Engineering PHD program through Colorado State University. They are very flexible about choosing proctors.
