After a long wait (6 weeks) and a few additional questions, Unisa has approved my application for registration for a DBL. The initial reading list and other stuff arrived in my inbox, and the adventure begins!

Congratulations, and best of luck with your studies! I believe you're the second member here to enroll in the DBL program.

    CONGRATULATIONS

Well first, CONGRATULATIONS, I am also awaiting my return reply from UNISA for the DBL program. They cashed in my money 9 days ago. I am wondering how long did it take after you put in your application, paid, sent transcripts did you get an answer. Let me know.

    Regards,

    UNISA....

Congrats! Question, how long was the initial reading list? Do you have any kind of exam or review at the end of it? What are the required visits? Just curious, these were all the questions I couldn't get answered when I looked into them. They were my first choice but I didn't go with them when they wouldn't state how many visits the DBL would require. I have been to their web site lately and it appears to have changed their visitation requirements a little bit. It is a good program though and I am sure it will meet your needs.

I waited 6 weeks to hear from Unisa that I was accepted, including discussions around whether the DBL was suitable for me (discuss of the DBL versus the DCom), and whether I was suitable for the DBL (discussion of the content of my previous degrees). I think the norm is closer to 4 weeks.

The reading list is 5-6 pages of books (prob 30-50) covering foundation knowledge, and one has to produce a literature review in the first year. There may also be some sort of exam, but I'm not sure yet.

There are 4 1-day colloquia per year, of which one must attend two (and present ones topic and work at some point). Thats fine for me, since I live close by.

Congratulations! I was accepted back in October but put off enrolling for now. I need to take some additional work related courses. The reading list is impressive.

Please keep us updated on your adventure!

    Re: CONGRATULATIONS

Maybe something has changed since last October but there was no fee at all when I applied. Only needed to pay for tuition after being accepted.

Did you use an agent to enroll?

No I did not. I went direct to the school. Should I have gone with an agent?

No, but I am wondering what kind of fee UNISA is now charging. Some of the agents charged for their services so I though that is what you paid.

John Craparo, the USA agent for UNISA helped me for free.

    Here is a query,

How many programs at UNISA are totally DL? Even the dissertation defense. Are the programs that are totally DL ..arts, sciences? Just asking.

    You stated

Is the colloquia in South Africa or is there somewhere in the states we can go too? Is it mandatory? I have gotten mixed messages from various people that stated I did not have to go to SA, I only had to go for the defense, It was optional for me to go to the colloquia. Let me know. Thanks

    Re: angela

I sent this e-mail to UNISA in May 2003:

    In part:

The only thing that is stopping me from enrolling is the colloquium travel
requirements. I am able and willing to travel to RSA up to two times. With
the cost of airfare as high as it is four or more trips would be too
    expensive for me.

I have been in contact with John Craparo, the USA agent for UNISA. He told
me it may be possible to get the travel requirements waived.

Would it be possible to get the travel requirements reduced? If so I will be
willing to take the chance. Please advise.

This is what I received from UNISA in May 2003 :

You could only visit us three times, but if any of your
presentations are not accepted you will have to present it again We cannot
    compromise on our requirements .

    Thank you ,

    Prof G Pelser

As far as I know they are only in South Africa. I discussed video conferencing with John but it looks like that will take awhile if ever.
