I would like to know if anyone knows of a college that offers a distance degree in Social Science.

TESC offers a degree in BA in History/Social Science but they have never responded to any of my requests.

I have 97 lower level college hours with 24 hours being a mixture of History, Psychology, Sociology and Economics beyond the general education requirments.

I am considering a BS in Social Science from Colorado State University - Pueblo, but I am looking for other alternatives.

Of my 97 hours, 39 are vocational courses in Computer Information Technology and may not be accepted everywhere. This is a consideration in my choice of schools as is financial assistance.

    Hi

Actually there are quite a few! As I've looked for Psych degrees I keep finding more general Social Science degrees. There are the Big Three (COSC, TESC and Ex.C.) that you seem to be aware of. From there the list is long. My personal favorite is Wash. State Univ., but there are others! Besides the CIS credits do you have any other preferences? What state do you live in? Any other info that may be helpful?

I live in Illinois and I am looking for a general Social Science degree.

I earned two CT certificates and employment with the CT hours.

I have about 100,000 words written for a book in Social Philosophy. A degree in Social Science would help me find a potential publisher when I am finished with the writting sometime next year.

COSC and Excelsior do not offer a degree in general Social Science. They offer degrees in Liberal Studies with concentrations. TESC seems to not be interested in new students.

    Thank you,

    Hi Scott

Just a quick answer about the Big Three. Excelsior specifically offers both a general BA/BS in Liberal Arts and one that is a Social Science major. Technically all degrees from COSC are in General Studies. On both the transcripts and diplomas they only list BA/BS and the concentration. Most would call that a BA/BS in Social Science, but if that doesn't meet your needs I certainly understand.

Are you aware of the distance learning programs in Illinois? Last time I looked there were quite a few.

Another one that interested me was Depaul University's distance learning degree because of the name of the school. It is more of an individualized studies degree. The major seems to be a self designed concentration which might work for you.

More later when I get a chance. Good luck in your search.

    Hi DaveHayden,

I checked out Wash State University website and I think they have a program I would be interested in. I could not find the costs, but I have not scoured the entire site.

My catalog from Excelsior does not list a general Social Science degree.

If anyone has had experience with Wash State, please let me know if you were happy or not.

    Any other suggestions are welcome.

You might look at Troy State University and their B.S. Social Science program entirely by distance learning:

    Hi,

I have a colleague that graduated from Washington State with his Phd in History. I dont know if this helps, but that is my connection with WAZZU. I know that he loved the program and is loving his professorship. If you need to know more, you can send me a pm. I hope this helps. BTW, he is my colleague because graduated from North Carolina Central with our MA's in history.

    Good afternoon!

A family member spent four years at Washington State on the main campus in Pullman, but she finished her degree with a few courses via WSU's distance learning program. She did the bachelor's degree in social science, and she felt the DL courses were every bit as rigorous as the B&M classes.

Also, the DDP staff members were very helpful, and they kept in continuous contact to make sure the student was making good progress toward graduation.

    Good luck in your search!

Kansas State has a B.S. in Interdisciplinary Social Science and Upper Iowa and the University of Maryland University College both have a B.S. in Social Science. I was in the K-State program for awhile, and liked it, but became impatient with the standard semester schedule and tranferred to Excelsior to speed up the process.

Also, SUNY Empire State College has an interdisciplinary degree called Social Theory, Social Structure and Change:

I will Grad in May from WSU DDP

I am finishing my Social Sciences degree from WSU this Spring. the cost per credit is 242.00 for semester based courses. For Flex-based courses it is about 80.00 lower. Sorry I cannot remember the cost off hand. Flex-based can be completed anytime, sooner of later, I believe you have 52-weeks to complete them. The staff at DDP are extremely hepful on the phone and the courses are on par with on-campus courses I have taken. Any specific questions feel free to ask.

Thanks to everybody for their input.

I have requested applications, catalogs, and financial aid info from Washington State and Colorado State - Pueblo.

I may also give TESC a try.

Any other suggestions would be welcome.

I could be wrong here, but doesn't Syracuse University offer this degree thru their ISDP (Independent Study Degree Program) DL service? (I think they do require that you take your last 30 semester credits there...but again - I could be wrong.)

SU does not get much play here on the board, likely because so expensive!

    Re: Re: Social Science Degree?

Syracuse also requires some residency for their ISDP programs. Not much, but it just adds to the already outrageous prices.

    Re: Re: Social Science Degree?

    Good evening!

Actually, Syracuse doesn't offer a degree in social science via distance learning at the undergraduate level. The ISDP program does offer a B.A. in Liberal Studies.

However, if one would like to earn a master's degree in social science from a well-known university, look at http://suce.syr.edu/Programs/Courses/distance/isdp/mssc/index.html on the web. The costs are significant, and a couple of two-week summer residencies are required. However, the course work and the professors are top-notch, and the part of the residency that is held at Minnowbrook is fantastic.

    Regards,
