    Hi.

I understand that the "Big 3" allows the possibility to get a bachelor's degree entirely by taking examinations.

I would like to know if its possible to get a doctorate, or at least most of its credits, by taking examinations only in any of those 3 institutions.

Also, what about the examinations plus portfoloio assesment?

Thank you very much for any answers you can provide me.

Another question: How many hours of study do you estimate are necessary to pass a proficiency test about a subject that it is not familiar to me?

I love to study/read books, but I don't like organizing research that much.

    Thanks.

    Thanks for the answers.

Should not this proficiency exams be harder? With one hour study to get 3 credits, it seems that they are not close to worth the same as a regular college class.

Friendlyman - The idea of taking exams to earn a bachelor's degree has been around for some time and is accepted by at least some of the regional accrediting agencies. At the graduate level, however, this approach is not generally available. Graduate degrees, especially doctorates, require "new learning" and research.

If you don't like organizing research, a doctorate may not be in the cards for you. Unless you truly love a subject and want to extend knowledge in this field, you really can't earn a doctorate.

    Best wishes - Andy

I was being facetious however the formula is accurate ... it is hard to predict how long it will take you to learn enough material to successfully take a test in a subject about which you have no knowledge.

You could get a PhD by profecency exam!

You could get a PhD by profecency exam. Just think of your dissertation as a proficency exam with a single question requiring a 200 page answer that you have 5 years to complete :D .

    Thank you all.

I must say that mcjon's answer gave me an instant better impression of how a doctorate should be. Very funny, but still I got a little boost from it. Maybe if I think that way I have better chances of completing a research program. After all, there are subjects that I would like to explore in depth.
