Article taken from www.psucolegio.com Professor wins research award Published: Thursday, November 13, 2003 Thomas M. Box, management and marketing professor, was co-author of a paper that recently won the Distinguished Research Award at the Allied Academies International Conference in Las Vegas. Allied Academies is a global nonprofit academic organization whose purpose is to support and encourage research. The award-winning paper, which Box co-authored with Susan Saxton, a professor and doctoral mentor at Capella University in Minneapolis, concerns the competitive strategy and background of a new airline company. The paper is a business policy case designed to be taught to senior-level undergraduates or first year MBA students. Box has received numerous awards for both teaching and scholarship and has served as an officer in various professional organizations. He earned his Ph.D. from Oklahoma State University and has served in the U.S. Marine Corps.
IIRC, one of the biggest knocks on the for-profits was that the faculty didn't engage in research. This certainly pokes a hole in that line of thinking.
Actually, the hole is pretty small. The concern is that for-profit schools don't promote and fund research. Yes, some adjunct faculty may do reserarch (in many cases as part of their full-time employment at non-profit schools) or faculty may work with students on extentions of their dissertations as in this case. But for-profits don't have advancement of knowledge as one of their goals. The vast majority of adjuncts at for-profit (and non-profit) schools aren't invovled in research. Their experience as practitioners is valuable, but their lack of research is a concern - particularly in PhD programs. Regards - Andy
Apparently, in addition to his role (adjunct?) at Capella, Dr. Box is also a full professor at Pittsburg State University. http://www.pittstate.edu/mgmkt/tbox.html Still good news for Capella, but I suspect that he identifies himself as a Pitt State professor, rather than a Capella professor.
Re: Re: Capella Professor Wins Research Award I believe Dr. Saxton was, at one time, the Dean of the School of Business at Capella. Paul C.
Re: Re: Re: Capella Professor Wins Research Award Thanks for your deference, considering that I apparently did not comprehend the point of the original post. I am not familiar with Dr. Saxton and a cursory search reveals no information. Honestly, I'm too tired to dig further.
