Hi all, I'm new to this board, and I'm a student at TESC, working both classes and CLEP/Dantes. I know TESC doesn't honor GRE, but please let me know what it is. Thanks.

scores totalled 1,599. (I never had to
to take it; Michigan State was using the
Miller Analogies Test at that time.)

    GRE vs MAT

My preference was the MAT, but it's not required now as much as the GRE.

What the dean at Michigan State told me years later was that there was evidence that a high but not incredibly high score on MAT correlated higher with success in graduate school than a low or a very high score. Specifically he said that scores in the 70s and low 80s correlated higher with success than high 80s or 90s. I've never looked further at this. And, of course, do we know anything about how success in graduate school correlates with success in life?

John Bear, who got 75 on MAT (and still can't believe
that at age 21, I didn't know what "woof" and "warp" were)
and 4.0 in Master's and Doctoral courses.

MAT is sure an easier test.

I also scored 75 for the MAT. It seemed very easy and I did use the Princeton review book for study. I have difficulty with math at times and the math on the MAT was just plain fun and silly compared to that on the GRE. It really seemed that the MAT was more "gamelike" and actually fun. I hope to take the GRE soon as some of the grad school admissions officers, with whom I am placing applications, require it. When, where, and why have so many schools turned to that damned GRE?

Re: MAT is sure an easier test.

I found the Princeton Review for the MAT was the best of all the prep books. I also scored in the 70s (I took it too many years ago to remember the exact score). It was fun and as John has pointed out, grad schools strongly believed that there was a high correlation between scores and success in graduate programs.

Don't know if the change to the GRE is because it is perceived to be a better tool or if the GRE has done a better marketing job than the MAT.
