Please share your discovery of 'time bombs' with me

As many of you know, Good Morning America did a segment on degree mills last month, in which their consumer editor, Greg Hunter, paid unannounced visits to three holders of fake degrees (which I had discovered on the internet) -- a 'doctor' with his own TV program, a standards engineer at the Bridgestone-Firestone tire plant, and a safety person at a nuclear power plant.

That segment got good ratings, and they would like to do a similar "outing" on a regular basis. So, if you make juicy discoveries, please share them with me, either on this forum or directly ([email protected]).

GMA is especially interested in (a) people on the public payroll, such as politicians, teachers, police, military, and so forth; (b) people in sensitive jobs (like the ones they did the first time); and/or (c) people with juicy newsworthy opportunities to go "nyaah nyaah nyaah" (such as the professor of criminal justice at a Michigan college, that Bill Gossett just found).

    Thanks for your help.

I'd love to see a time when every fake degree holder in America is sitting there, hoping that Greg Hunter won't be heading up his or her path.

What puzzles me is, why is Western - Kennedy so prominent? Have they managed to stay around longer, are they better at avoiding getting closed down? Why do even some Stanford profs list themselves as Adjunct Professors at KW - sorry , can't find the link for this one. Being an adjunct prof can hardly be a star on one's CV, I would have thought ....

Where's the cut-off line being drawn here? How are 'degree mill' and 'fake degree' being defined?

Unaccredited universities? Substandard universities? Schools that simply sell degrees? (Many of those hide behind the fig leaf of giving credit for "life experience".)

Doing this kind of thing will almost inevitably draw lawsuits. Employees' careers and their employers' reputations are being attacked, so a spirited defense is to be expected.

This could end up with a MIGS-style defamation lawsuit on a grand scale, unless people are very careful about what they allege.

I think that it's a safe bet saying that SGUI is a degree mill.

Credit for life experience is something that I think is fairly valid at the bachelor's level, though. In question here is the degree mill doctorate.

Most of the up and up programs I have seen(I have looked at Ohio U. and TESC in the past) have stringent rules on how they will accept credit for life experiences. You must be able to document your learing fairly well to get the credit. I can probably say that this is not done so stringently at SGUI...even at the bachelor's level.

This person has more problems than just holding a degree mill credential, IMO...

The original GMA piece had to do with Columbia State University; I think it's safe to call that one a degree mill.

When Duke pounds Michigan State on April 2 in the final four, I think MSU will lose its accreditation, so Dr. Bear's degree will become suspect.

    Getting the third degree
Campus police sergeant pursuing Ph.D. in criminology....

....However, Mark, who has a bachelor's degree in criminal justice and a master's in humanities, obviously needs more to occupy his mind. In about three months he will have earned a doctorate degree in criminology from Columbia State University.....
