Folks, for so long Saybrook, under the Humanistic and Transpersonal Psychology Mantra has worked hard at avoiding soiling and polluting itself with such limiting forces as the American Psychological Association. Well... apparently that has changed. Market forces being what they are... Saybrook appears to be going for APA programmatic accreditation! What a surprise! I am posting part of the info where they are looking for a new dean for Psychology and they stress his expertise in taking the school towards APA accreditation: Retrieved from http://www.saybrook.edu/about_saybrook/employment/job_openings.asp on 02-06/2004
They will get it It couldn't have happened at a better time. The newly elected head of APA is a professor of Psychology at Nova Southeastern University. Ike
I don't know if this is a surprise or not. It's a good program AFAIK and their Humanistic orientation doesn't run contrary to the APA which has its own dividion of Humanistic Psychology. http://www.apa.org/about/division.html See Division 32 I'm not familiar enough with either organization to fully understand why they've never sought APA accreditation before. It will be interesting to see what sorts of changes they make in order to meet the APA criteria. If you're going to be keeping your eye on this then please keep us updated. Jack
Well not only are market forces what they are, but something else may ahve happened. The California Institute for Integral studies has just received APA accreditation. Perhaps the message being sent is that the humanistic/transpersonal schools fo psychology and less traditional learning models have their honored place. Perhaps Saybrook is being given the message that they, as a non-traditional school, do not have to "sell out" to APA and lose their distictive ethos in the process..
