CCHS saga part 131

  1. CCHS lost my project one, which included my cover sheet, reference copies, appendix, etc. The instructor said I could fax the report. I faxed the report along with the reference/bibliography, but now she wants me to go back to the university library where I originally accessed the journal articles and look them all up again.

This is partially my fault because I didn't go to Kinkos to copy my sources, but it is a big pain in the ass that this incompetant school loses everything.

I have been trying to schedule my final exam for a very long time so I can at least get credit, but at this point I wonder if I should just give up and forget about the hassle.

CCHS is the worst school I have ever encountered. They are rude (when you can reach someone), disorganized, and just plain mean spirited.

Part of the reason why I decided to try DL is to avoid going to the university. I would have been much better off just taking the class at my local university. It would have been cheaper and I would have been finished last December.

One thing CCHS is never late about is billing. AVOID CCHS AT ALL COSTS. IT IS NOT WORTH THE HASSLE AND YOU WILL NEVER FINISH YOUR DEGREE.

How did you hand it part 1? If you sent mail, and can show proof (like a tracking number), I would say it is on them. Escalate!

  3. They admit it arrived--they can't find it

They go back and forth about whether or not they have it. I think that they are on the verge of losing accreditation and do not want to issue any graduate units.

The project did arrive at their school, but in the mass confusion that now rules the school, it was lost. They now say it is MY responsibility to resubmit everything.

I have completed many DL and online courses without any problem. My BA is from a regular B&M university, where I earned a 4.0 GPA. CCHS is just jerking me around.

My empathy to you. I have no suggestions on how to bleed this particular turnip, but having once been screwed blued and tattooed by a "distinguished" RA university, I might suggest one thing for your future reference.

Make a careful list of what went wrong; note how some act of vigilance on your part or additional bit of information could have prevented a specific problem; note also--this is important--where no additional action on your part could have prevented what went wrong; assemble all your documentation. Keep this file permanently. It will probably irritate you greatly to compile and review it. Do it anyway. Use it as a red flag sender-upper in future dealings with future schools. This is sort of a bitter aftertaste, but if it prevents a future ingestion of academic poison, well and good. The point is not to berate yourself, but to analyze as clearly as you can the process of things going haywire in order to prevent it in the future.

My earliest attempts to address a difficult academic problem via DL almost led me to fall for places which were either frauds or woefully inept. That I did NOT is scarcely due to any astuteness on my part but only to my slowness in filling out forms, sending out checks, etc., which slowness allowed my curiosity more time to root around on the internet, make investigative phone calls, AND search, search, search thisyere degreeinfo board, etc.

Again, I'm sorry that CCHS was such a bust. Learning is the best vengeance. Good luck to you.

  5. Thanks, Uncle

Another poster to this forum has made a complaint to DETC. I have just sent an email with specific complaints that I hope will be read. Do you know of another way to contact DETC? I'm afraid in the era of Spam that many emails go unread.

...and in the era of email, old fashioned letters get read, because they are much harder to ignore. I'd suggest a personal letter to Michael Lambert, Executive Director, DETC. You might even want to do a "cc" to the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Accreditation and State Liaison. Those are the people who 'accredit' the accreditors.

Look them up again, what the hell for? If the instructors are not familiar with the current literature that scares me. If she doubts they are real she should look them up.

For my MLS I read the same authors many times: Ranganathan, de La Pena-McCook, Robbins, Zweizg, Manley and a bunch of authors names that slip my mind, but if I saw them in a list of works cited I would certainly know they were real and I could look them up if I were so inclined.

Do what Dr. Bear suggests. You don't have to put up with this nonsense. If you have any student loans I would also give the department of education a call and ask about failing schools and loans.

John is correct that letters are much harder to ignore, but I also know that emails to the DETC are not ignored. Whether or not a CC to the US DOE will help is a matter of opinion. While there isn't a reason not to do it and I support that type of action if I do not believe something will be done, in the case of DETC, it is my opinion, that copying the DOE or not will not change the action that DETC takes. In this case I would have copied the DETC on my complaints to the school.

  9. Last mail copied

I again (sigh) sent the missing project to CCHS via certified mail and did indicate a copy to DETC. I'm not sure if CCHS cares whether or not DETC is contacted, but everything now will go to both CCHS and DETC via certified mail. BTW--you can now print postage labels from USPS.com, so trips to the post office are avoided.

I wish I could be of more help. It is not a problem that you did not copy DETC on your project - they can't help with getting your project graded. They need to be made aware of the many problems you have had - the DETC does keep a record of such things and these are factored into site visits for reaccrediation - the school is of course given a chance to fix the problem.

As you have so carefully documented here, you should share that information - timeline, action, response or lack thereof, with the DETC. And of course continue to keep detailed records.

May I ask what address you are sending the information to? I note that they have a new address as reported in the latest DETC bulletin:

    California College for Health Sciences
    5295 South Commerce Drive
    Murray, UT 84107

If you are not sending your complaints, materials etc. to that address, you might also want to send a copy of everything there as well.

I really am sorry for the difficulties you are having. I know that this is not acceptable under any circumstances.

    Best,
    Mary

I can sympathize. I wrote a message on another thread about CCHS so I won't go into details. One time a took a new course. There were so many wrong answers in the study guide which some of the exam questions are taken from, they had to redo the final exam before sending it. When I arrived at my proctor for the exam she was running up the hall to get the exam which just arrived by Federal Express. I was embarrassed by all the fuss and extra trouble for my proctor who didn't have time for all this nonsense.
