Does anyone have any knowledge of a good, reputable online school that offers a degree in crime scene technology, investigation or criminalistics? I have seen a few that offer certificates, or an associates degree. Are there any that offer a bachelors?

Anyone have an opinion on Kaplan or St. Petersburg? I am currently enrolled at UOP and really do not want to enter into another situation like the one I am in now. Thanks for all your input!!!

  2. Not an opinion specifically on those two schools (although I've spoken to the program coordinator at St. Petersburg and was suitably impressed) but a "thinking point:" If you're looking at a degree/certificate in Crime Scene Technology as an "in" to the field, know going in that the program would need to have a huge practical/lab component to serve any purpose, something unlikely in an entirely DL format.

If you're already in the field, then a degree in a relevant science area might be more useful at the undergraduate level in the long run, particularly if you find yourself drawn to a particular specialty rather than "generalist" work.

I can tell you some horror stories about trying to play "catch-up" in graduate-level Forensic Science courses without appropriate undergraduate preparation.

I have taught some labs and one lecture at St. Petersburg College - when it was St. Petersburg Junior College.

I know of one person who graduated from the Crime Scene program on campus and now works for the S.O.

I also know they are our local police academy having taken that responsibility over from the vocational-technical school where it was when I went ~ 20 years ago. (how time flies). And my significant other graduated from there and she now works for the S.O on the road.

SPC also provides training at the NTPI, national terrorism perparedness institute, that provides instruction to many police officers and military personnel so they say.

I have applied for positions at the NTPI using my experience as a L.E.O. (however brief), a paramedic, an RN having done a COSTEP internship with CDC working with biological agents -long before the anthrax problems- and now with my MLS and they have not hired me. Heck I've even taken all of the distance FEMA courses !
I'm not sure if that reflects well or poorly upon them :p Well 7-11 always needs clerks.
