Can anyone tell me of any liberal arts type distance BA programs in CA that are both RA and not "teaching" types? Or individualized studies? Anything other than the teacher track... Thanks so much, Reed
There aren't many, due in part to the regional accreditor for California being less sympathetic to distance learning. Have you searched the 300+ school database available on this forum? If so, did you really find nothing? One wonders, needless to say, why the need for a distance learning program that is located in a particular state.
In-state tuition comes to mind.. Isn't in-state California tuition really cheap (or is it just community colleges)? Best Regards, Bill
Probably instate tuition.. CCs are still affordable. I don't know for sure about undergrad at the CSUs, but it seems to me there has been about a 25% increase in the last three years or so. All part of the CA budget crisis. According to something I just read on the Sac State Hornet site, tuition may rise another 10% for undergrad and as much as 40% for grad next year if the proposal of Jan 9 made by the new Governor passes. Yes there are instate and out of state differences at some of the schools. There are also differences if you are enrolled in the university or the extended university. Along those lines, back to the original question: EU at CSU Bakersfield has an online BA program in Environmental Resource Management. This is very close to what most schools offer as an environmental studies program, but a more specific subject area. Check out http://www.csub.edu/erm/ . I'm a bit biased since I did my MA there, but the people at CSUB and especially those involved with Extended University are top notch. Reed, don't know if the kind of piecemeal approach is your cup of tea, but it seems to be a good alternative for someone who already has collected some units. Just my $.02 Lloyd

You should also look at the California virtual Campus , not 100% up to date but adequate. Also, unfortunately, as with many disciplenes (sp?) most programs are at the masters level. Individual Cal State programs can be located at http://www.calstate.edu/
Re: Probably instate tuition.. You are right - Gov Ahnults proposed budget would increase undergrad fees by 10% and grad fees by 40%. Again it's just a proposal and it probably won't fly with the State Legislature. Community College fees would also rise from $18.00 per unit to $24.00 per unit - still a gigantic bargain compared to other states. Until June 30, 2003 they were only $11.00 per unit. All fees quoted are in-state fees.
Cal State U. Fresno was working on a distance learning liberal studies BA program for prospective teachers. I'm not sure where they are in the process. Even with the increases, California State University (CSU) tuition is still not too bad. University of California (UC) tuition is pretty high, however. Tony
When it comes to teaching, CA has the higest standards (or think they do). They don't take crudentialed teachers from other states in csome cases. This may be why there is a request for CA?
I have found a few teacher track CA BA programs but nothing just plain LIBERAL ARTS or GENERAL STUDIES or INDIVIDUALIZED STUDIES. That's my problem anyway.... Reed
