The publication "Educational Pathways" (http://www.edpath.com) has a very good article on Excelsior College in its Jan. 15, 2004 issue. The article covers the history and current growth of the college. Basic highlights -- currently at 27,000 students with 70% of the students in Nursing. Overall, the article is very extensive and covers Excelsior very well.

The 70% figure regarding nursing enrollment is suprising to me.

It is difficult to assess the accuracy of these articles without access, which one does not get when following the link.

Assuming the figures are true, perhaps they are a result of the "nursing shortage" so often discussed in the media. I put that term in quotes because I don't believe a shortage exists. While Elaine Chao states that the country has a nursing shortage of 750,000, there are others who say that there are that many nurses licensed who do not choose to practice! If so, there isn't a shortage. But there is an issue about why so many nurses don't serve. And that has very much to do with the working conditions they work under.

You are so right Dr. Douglas. There is a shortage because licensed nurses have quit, retired, changed careers, whatever, because of the conditions we are forced to work under. If they aren't practicing then there is certainly a shortage no matter what the reason. Rather than turn out more new nurses who will burn out in 5 years, the system should be looking at why they are losing bright, hard working, excellent nurses who have been practicing for 10+ years and walk away.

Excelsior (Regent's) has always had a very very strong nursing program and I don't doubt the 70% figure.

I can't attest to the quality of the associate nurse they turn out. I can say from just purusing the various Yahoo Excelsior nursing groups that they flunk various sections in pretty significant numbers. My hat is off to those who make it soley by DL training. I can't imagine having to tackle the subject alone with some books. But they do it.
