    She beat the pigeon.

No master's degrees seem to be listed.

A new graduate student in a mostly-PhD granting program will generally be described as a doctoral student early on, and will receive a masters along the way, sometimes after completing required course work and passing a battery of comprehensive exams. It's assumed that (if everything goes as expected) the student will continue, receiving a PhD a few years later.

Broderick, you discovered this the day after I did. See http://forums.degreeinfo.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=12014

Did you discover it the same way I did? I used the following Google search:
    "Saint Regis University" site:.edu

I didn't know how long the SRU reference had been on the page I found. But if other people have been running the same search repeatedly, this may be a very recently changed Web page, and a recently admitted student.

The last snapshot at Wayback Machine was 02-July-2003, and she's not listed.

I graduated from North Carolina Central University. NCCU is a part of the 16 member UNC system, to which ECU is part of. I am sure that this young graduate student got into ECU on the strength of her GRE, GPA and written statement..right?

The student began the program this January.

  8. What does John Bear have to say?

I'm just curious... at one time John Bear said that if one of the SRU guys could prove that "one, just one" example of an SRU graduate being admitted to an RA institution could be proven he would be willing to perhaps give this all some second consideration, or something to that effect....

Looks like we have that "one example" here folks.

Between your original post and Broderick’s the information was posted to AED and CollegeHints, two forums whose only posts of substance are repetitions of what is posted here. In other words, if you read something interesting on those forums it behooves you to check the archives here before posting. :D

Carl, here is what Dr Bear actually wrote:
There was a reason he wrote "have a policy of accepting" and not "have ever accepted".

Re: What does John Bear have to say?

Not exactly. Dr. Bear wanted proof that an RA institution accepted St. Regis degrees or transfer credits as a matter of policy. This clearly isn’t the case here, as this student simply “fell through the cracks.”

    Mark,
Found it on the crappy AED site. I have to admit, it will give some of the creepy folks there ammo for more insults and banter. If anyone asks why I even bother to look around on AED, I say for the same reason people slow to see a car accident or watch Jerry Springer! I cant help myself! I think I need 12 steps for distance ed.

I have brought many items from the other two sites mentioned before they were mentioned here.

Please reread my post. Pay particular attention to the terms “of substance” and “interesting.” :D

May I ask a question? It was tough as nails to get into the NCCU program. I had to prove myself with 3 straight A's to be accepted formally because my GRE was at 1000. Now I realize that each institution is different and that ECU's (Psych program, I think) programs are in a different mode. If she got in on her own merits, my hat is off to her. I wonder if this sheds my NCCU degree in a different light. Maybe my NCWC degree. Both are well regarded institutions. Just curious ramblings. Good luck to her. Doctoral programs are not easy..(i.e University of Houston, Texas A&M)

I guess that sort of clears that up then. Thanks for checking the archives. I agree with the general consensus that it seems like this one sort of "slipped through the cracks". Still, I'm surprised that it is listed so openly on the web site, and I'm guessing that the person in question (with the SRU degree) must be quaking in her boots at this point about when this is going to blow up in her face.

    Uhh

Isn't it possible that East Carolina jsut screwed up and admitted someone with a non-RA degree by mistake? I remember the case from the 1990's in which a Yale student revealed that he faked his way into Yale with a fake transcript. The story I read indicated that, with the appropriate computer software, transcripts can be forged. The article stated that the person on question fooled Yale because universities usually do not usually go to the trouble of screening all applicants so closely that they do a background check on each. It might be useful to have a national database of enrollment data from most acreditted universities so that institutions can check up on applicants ... like a credit check or background check. for a job. I assume that such a database does not exist due to FERPA.
