For those of you who have earned college credit through standard challenge exams (AP, CLEP, DANTES, ECE, GRE, TECEP...), what proportion of the credits that you earned thus were for tests that you chose just because a standard test was available in that subject, and not because you wanted or needed the subject?

  2. About 1/3 - all general education credits. The rest pertain directly to my degree requirements or to tests that I wanted to take to obtain credit.

An example is "Here's To Your Health" - the DL equivalent of Basket Weaving 101, and something I wouldn't have taken unless I knew it was available and easy.

I can not really answer because I took many exams at a military post and they have all CLEP, DANTES, and ECE exams on hand. I based my selections on the highest military passing rates.

To Randell: By "available", I meant "existing somewhere", not "on hand".

There were many subjects that my wife Rosie would have loved to be tested in (e.g. simultaneous interpretation, ESL teaching). But there were no standard exams available in those subjects, which led her to pursue DANTES exams in subjects peripheral to her interests. That's what I was referring to.
