    Folks:

I am ready to do the hard work ... and almost decided to go for a Doctorate Degree. I am in the IT industry (research and development) and will not possibly go for a teaching profession (well, at the same time I dont want to rule out the possibility ;) ...

I was looking at the EBS DBA program at their website (ebsdba.com) -- I need more information... If I target four years (2 yrs for 11 courses and 2 yrs for dissertation), here is what I get:

From my idea if I go through self study route the taught elements will cost 800 pounds + 100 pounds = 900 pounds per course => 11 courses @900 pounds = 9900 pounds

    +

    Research Proposal : 1200 pounds

    +

Thesis development and completion 4000 pounds per year :

    4000 X 2 yrs = 8000 pounds

    Cost in total for 4 yrs (9900 + 1200 + 8000) = 19100 pounds

    => US$ 34,916 as of today ....

Not a bad price for a such a prestigious program (please no debate on this).

Ok, now can someone answer me the following questions (Possibly Professor Kennedy) ? :

    a) Does this program has residency requirement outside of the United States (not an option for me)

    b) Does it require GMAT / GRE or any other testing?

    c) How does the initial teleconferencing interview work?

    d) How much would it cost for books ?

    e) Is it really possible to finish those 11 taught elements through self study route?

    Thanks

Ok, I used the search function of this forum and got this following info.

    No residency requirement.
    No GMAT/GRE requirement.

According to the hwdba website, if I can complete those 11 courses, I get an MSc degree, now question for professor Kennedy:

Does this mean that the MSc is awarded only if I decide not to continue with the dissertation?

    or

It means EBS/HW will award me an MSc after completion of those 11 courses and I can still continue with the dissertation.

If the later one is the correct interpretation, then within this cost range - I am actually getting an MSc and a DBA --- am I correct?

    Thanks

    Hi 'mfh'

The aim of Distance Learning is to introduce as much flexibility (consistent with high quality) as possible into university education and break away from campus mentalities that prescribe this or that way of studying, rigid progressions and other restrictive practices by campus academics mainly to do with job protection and not services to adult students. Scalability in DL, modular courses that can be mixed and matched, limited prior requirements, an end to over concern with inputs and not outputs as measures of student performance and the use of innovative technologies where appropriate, are benefits of DL.

There is no residency element, though any student is always welcome to atttend the campus or even take a taught course once they start in the Spring of 2005. Otherwise all courses can be taken by self study in your country of residence. The examinations in all courses in the DBA programme take place at an invigilated (protored) examination centre near your place of residence, in common with all our distance learning programmes.

There is no GMAT/GRE required. These are rationing devices for campus programmes, not for DL.

Teleconferencing, where required, is in the normal manner, at a convenient time for the time zones. Professor Roberts, Professor Jones and Dr Bill Wallace, who run the DBA programme, can fill you in on the details.

The course fees for each module of the DBA include the provision of the printed , specially written, textbooks (plus eDBA site for each course). No further books are required to be purchased or read. DL courses must be self-contained.

The 11 taught courses are all self-study instruments, and the whole course can be taken as self-study, provided you can pass our final examinations, which I have described several times on degreeinfo. Currently, the 53 participants are working through their courses (as are nearly 10,000 MBA students working through theirs). I am also working through two of them as I am writing the DBA taught course, Strategic Negotiation, to be ready for the printer by end of March 2004 (yes, I know!) and want to check the intergration and avoid overlaps in certain areas.

On complettion of the MSc taught courses in Strategic Focus a student is eligible for the University's award, which has nothing to do with continuing or not continuing in the DBA programme. The MSc degree is available generally to DL students, many of whom will not intend to enter the DBA programme at all. Only persons with the MSc and who complete the DBA thesis will graduate DBA.

    Kind regards

    Professor Kennedy:

Many thanks for your reply. I got all the answers I needed.

I am still exploring some other Universities out of US, but EBS will be the first choice for my doctorate degree. I know its a new program - but based on the input from my circle, I have no doubt about the quality of EBS education.

    Thanks
