I am currently considering completing my degree at Western Governors University... and not that it really matters but why does it ask if you are at least 23 years old?

I am guessing because the programs are designed with the "adult learner" in mind. I think they feel that if you are 18 and fresh out of high school, you should consider a more traditional method of earning a degree.

    Greetings.

My impression is that the original raison d'etre for institutions like WGU (www.wgu.edu) and its ilk (www.cosc.edu, www.regents.edu, www.tesc.edu) was to give elderly proletariat one last chance at getting a degree, if not necessarily exactly the education that normally accompanied it. Obviously, if you weren't already washed-up (i.e. over 23), you would *attend* a proper college and get a *proper* degree.

Another possible reason is that young 'ins aren't considered to be disciplined enough to pursue distance studies. It takes a certain amount of decrepitude to make a good distance learner; someone who is still ambulatory can't be depended upon to stay home and study.

WGU is a competency based university. Without offending the young'uns amongst us, I am assuming one must be at least 23 of age to be competent in the subject matter.

    Further decrepitude
