  1. Since I'm not going to finish the CCHS Master's program due to their administrative problems, I'm now looking for an alternative. I have just started to teach high school and want to earn a masters for salary purposes. The masters has to be in an area that I have a credential, which is Social Science (includes History, Economics, Psychology), Health, Biology, or Education. My BA is in History. I am considering Ft. Hays MLS with Social Science concentration or the University of Illinois at Springfield Education M.A. Since I will pay for this out of my own pocket, I want a low cost program. I understand that Ft. Hays and U of Illinois both have RA, but the school district will accept credit from an institution that is at least DETC. Any experiences with Ft. Hays or U of Illinois? Any other ideas for U.S. based schools will also be greatly appreciated. The school district isn't very friendly towards foreign schools.

    I work in Springfield...

and looked into getting my MBA at UIS. However, all of their classes are/were on the semester format so if you take 2 classes a semester it will take you forever to finish. I don't know if this has chabged. I would guess Ft. Hays would be cheaper if you are not from Illinois as our state schools are pretty pricey to out of state students. The Ft. Hays program looks pretty good from what I have seen of it. If it were me I would go to the cheapest and most convenient RA school.

Note to those ready to pounce, I said convenient not easiest.

    Fort Hays

Yes, I'm just finishing at Charter Oak and Fort Hays is on my short list. They seem to have their act together and it also seems that they have a particular interest in history. Nice school from what I've seen. It may also look a bit better (to some folks) than some of these other privately owned online schools.
Western Alabama University is another pretty interesting candidate.

  4. The semester at my local state university lasts 15 weeks. Even though I turned all of my work in, I haven't even been able to schedule a final at CCHS, so who knows how long their semester lasts? A semester to complete course work is fine.

    Indiana State University (ISU)

Check out Indiana State University (ISU). They are a very well known teachers' college started as Indiana State Normal School in the 1800's. Teachers' colleges were called "Normal Schools" back then, I don't know why. A large number of topic are offered with the university which is regionally accredited and state sponsored.

Indiana State University started Ball State University and the University of Southern Indiana.

Classes are offered internationally by video tape, the web, and correspondance. Video tapes are mailed right to your front door!

    Anyway check them out at:

    Good Luck,

  6. Thanks for the tip about ISU. I visited the site but only found info about the BA program. I already have a teaching credential, so what I am looking for is a program that will award a MA/MS so I can earn more. My district pays teachers with Masters $4000 more each year, so I want a program that will pay for itself within a couple of years since I am not eligible for any grants. I want to keep my student loan as low as possible.
